Advice if you are currently in the job market

I am not the be all say all in this department so take this all as you will and know that this is from a place of rugged experience and looking to pay it forward.

Some tips and advice as I see people coming in here asking about their next role and what to ask for/look for

  • Watch out for companies that raised at an insane valuation and even raised capital recently because they may have gotten $$$ on a promise of a future vision with xxx in promised revenue when over the next 12 months they can only support x amount of sales. Why should you look out for this? If they promised insane amounts of sales your quotas will be based off of this and because of that likely not easily attained and you will be let go back to square 1.
  • People love to go to whats new and so AI is dominating the headlines, however, orgs that have done layoffs already about 12-24 months ago have learned hard lessons hopefully and if they are hiring it usually means they have fixed their internal issues and are somewhat more realistic
  • At the end of the day you have to prove with utmost confidence you can sell and have no fear of the phone and no trepidation about what quota will be, slightest ounce of concern on your end and they will close the door faster than you can say commission.
  • Ask for pre-negotiated severance. How? "So I'd really love to be able to work at this org for 5 10 15 years and realize this may be a strange ask, we are coming off 2 of the more wild years in this industry and I have seen layoffs run rampant are you open to discussing a severance package in case this occurs here against best efforts?"

May have missed a few but hope this might be helpful to some

Solid way to add the ask for severance. This is needed in today's market for sure.

It's a great thing to ask, and this is really good wording.

Thanks @Justatitle !

All bullets are spot on. But I'd put #3 at the top. When you get asked "How do you feel about making 40 well researched dials a day?" Your answer should be "I feel like that's a half day's work." Any slight hint of call reluctance is a deal breaker.

I mean, in every job I've had in this industry, it is a half day's work.

Well my response to you would be that if you are just powering through dials that isn't really the point(not saying that is what you are doing) I'd rather have 3 really solid conversations and 30-40 calls than 1 maybe and ripping 80 dials.

There are a few more I left off
- Check Glassdoor reviews and look for the bad ones. anything below 4 stars on Glassdoor gives me some concern

- Ask to connect with current reps in the company that have been there for 2+ years.

Outside of Crunchbase, any tools you use to monitor funding?

quite honestly funding is a pretty big deal, TechCrunch articles and Google searches all give you pretty much everything that you need.

Good advice.

We talked a lot about negotiating severance when coming on board a while back. Itโ€™s not an easy conversation but totally worth having if you can do it.

One of the things I really struggle with in this job search is knowing what kind of jobs I'm "qualified" for. I've been in sales almost a decade, but only ~3 of those years were in tech/software (one SDR role and two AE jobs). Laid off at one AE job, fired in the other. And I can't get a straight answer from anyone on whether I'm more competitive as a candidate in the AE space, or in the SDR space. I just want to move forward and if I have to start all over again, fine, but I need to know what pool I should be swimming in.

There isn't anything wrong with taking an SDR role and especially because SDR roles right now are paying well where OTE of 100k plus is realistic. I'd highly recommend looking at DEEL and trying to get in there.

If I'm honest, I will be a little frustrated handing off deals to AEs with less experience than I have. But it is something I can live with if there's a realistic shot at making it back to AE in a decent timeframe. But what I'm more wondering is are hiring managers interested in hiring former AEs into SDR roles? Also, if they're in office (which most SDR jobs are now), the nearest tech hub to me is Austin, 2 hours away. Is that going to scare away hiring managers?

Trying to be as flexible as possible, and part of that is knowing how to maximize my potential to actually get an offer by being as competitive of a candidate as I can.

In this case, SMB AE is probably the road to take, the jobs are out there and I realize you are frustrated, if you'd like to DM me happy to help in whatever way I can by opening up some network connections.

I don't think DMs are possible without an iPhone.
