Are you there, job market? It’s me, Bonez.

Howdy Y'all,

Ok so I need some validation here. Around this time last year I got laid off due to an acquisition and immediately started applying. It was rough considering how many layoffs were happening but I managed to get a decent amount of interviews and secured 3 offers after about 1.5 months.

Fast forward to today and I'm looking again because my current role makes me want to jump out of a building. So I'm applying left and right and basically getting auto-rejected or rejected after a few days. Not even securing an interview. Using the same resume that's landed me other jobs and the only difference is I have more experience now.

Curious if anyone else is experiencing this or is it just me? I know the job market isn't great but it wasn't last holiday season and I at least got interviews! Maybe things got worse and I wasn't paying attention? I'm not sure so I thought I'd throw it out there to the homies.

I got a new job about 3 months ago and I immediately started emailing the hiring managers and vps after I’d applied basically pitching why I’m worth considering and it worked out.

Any tips on how to believe you're worth pitching? That's been my major hangup in reaching out to hiring managers. I just don't have any value prop for myself and I have a hard time thinking of anything I can bring to the table that thousands of others can't also bring to the table.

Don't worry about the others. Seriously. You cannot worry about how you measure up; that always backfires. Just forget about any competition, and tell them why YOU are a fit. It's not YOU in comparison to Candidate X or Y. It's YOU as the best person for the role.

Having the awareness and confidence to reach out to the hiring manager is something in and of itself. Most won’t.

It's been a while since I actively applied for a new role, but I can only imagine it's a combination of companies using AI/Pre-screen solutions to (auto reject) resumes with certain key words, or indicators that may flag you as a bad fit.

My guidance would be to update your Resume, and learn what's trending in your market/industry. I'd also reach out on Linkedin to the HRBPs or hiring teams at any one of the jobs you're particularly interested in and just ask what they are looking for / evaluating for and maybe you can get a pass on whatever screening methods they are applying.

^ this is right on the nose. Need to tweak your resume to get through the ATS by adding the key words/lingo their job posting uses. Kinda dumb but it’s the game you have to play.

I hate ATS. They're just awful. Good advice,
It's also a brutal time of year to find something though. Things usually kick into gear again in Q1.
Good luck @bonez !

Actively applying to jobs right now. Job market is definitely a lot colder than 1.5 years ago when I was looking. I’ve landed all my interviews as of late by reaching out to the hiring managers/relevant members of the team through cold calls, emails, or LinkedIn. We just gotta keep grinding out!

I haven't applied for jobs for quite sometime now but I am getting very less outreaches vs last year.

Market is brutal and may get significantly worse. Keep this in mind when you have the ability to influence economies and positions for companies.

Keep at it you’ll kick butt out there just takes time. Holiday season is very challenging as it is too.

It's a bloodbath out here today. I left my job in April of this year and didn't get an offer until October.
