Alliances?

Curious about an alternate career path idea.

The org I work for has approximately 4K employees, and has an Alliances division. My basic understanding of its function is that employees in that division work to forge relationships and partnerships with other software vendors in the industry and own those relationships.

Have any of you known colleagues of yours who have worked in Alliances and if so what was there experience like? Any idea of what earning potential this division may have?

Would love to hear any additional insight you may all have. Thank you!

I personally have never worked in alliances, but the alliances director at my old company seemed to make bank

My current and previous role, while not specifically an "Alliances" title, was focused on generating partnerships and strategic alliances in our space.

Think of it as sales, but instead of hunting for a "deal" you are working toward a long term partnership. More research is needed, more hand holding, more posturing, more paperwork, more red tape, more calls/emails/etc. BUT, also more reward. I thrive in this environment because all I do is hunt whales, got no time for fishes.

Think of it like an Enterprise AM/AE but with smaller short term payout because you don't control the price/margin of deals, just reap the reward and benefit of locking in the partnership.

Every partner alliance manager I've known has been happy.  I'm not sure if that's a function of the role, or a requirement for the role.    Often it's a fast track to higher level management, so while you might not make as much as an IC, base pay is higher and the path to VP is shorter if you excel.  You're also talking to any number of external partners, and have a finger on the pulse of a lot of other companies out there - which makes it easy to move along if you wish.  You'll have the best kind of network there is.

I work in that area, but kind of a hybrid role. You make less money than if you hit your quota as an IC. However, you get to work more, and have a lot more friendly conversations

Three moves and they are all Manager roles? At some point, you'll be managing managers, which is typically what a Director does.
