Am I Going Crazy?

I sold real estate for multiple years and was hired into a PropTech about 9 months ago. my first SaaS job. I'm an AE with $70k base, and the OTE was said to be $120k, although I'm #3 on the leaderboard and it's very clear that $90k OTE is fantastic, and nobody will make north of that -- maybe $92k for #1 spot. Everyone else will make maybe $10k-$15k in commission total for the year. Is this not insanely low? We make like 5.5% commission on $15k avg deals. on top of that, we don't have SDR's and create our own opps via cold calling.

Nobody is making any money, but the company keeps adding AE's left and right. I don't understand it in any way. Is there greener grass elsewhere or is this just tech sales? I can't seem to find the $200k+ potential roles anywhere...

No, you're not crazy. OTE is something to check on when looking for a new job - backchannel by reaching out to reps and see what's really going on as far as attainment.

The fact that nobody's making their number and they're relying on you all to do everything while still hiring means that they're going for market share as quickly as possible and don't really care about the reps. (Note to self, many companies won't really care about the reps either, but will do a better job of communicating OTE).

You can start looking, but right now, there are a lot of tech workers who have been laid off and are jumping on those roles pretty quickly, so it's a buyer's market for companies looking for reps. That said, people have found good jobs, you may just need to keep looking.

There was a spreadsheet posted by Corp with companies that are hiring that you might want to take a look at, and see if there's anything there suitable for you.

Wishing you the best - and if it's not been clear from previous posts, it's easier to find a job when you have a job, so do your best to find something new before you give notice.

What’s the company roadmap for this year? Just to hire and hire without any plans or something logical?

Depending on the goal and my gut feeling, I will either stick around for some more time or jump ship.

Unfortunately there are a lot of tech companies that will sell YOU on an inflated OTE that's not actually attainable. If you're a top performer and you're not getting anywhere near what was promised, it's time to look elsewhere or have an uncomfortable conversation with leadership.

Is this a startup, by chance?

They call it a startup, but, no. My team is only 9 months old, but the company has been around for 12yrs

Gotcha, was just curious because startups are usually the most guilty when it comes to overselling OTE. It might be excusable if your team is that young, though. At the one year mark, it'd be good for management to be more realistic about OTE since they'll have an actual year of data for folks in the role.

You have to find jobs with both higher OTEs and deal size. That’s where you hit those big numbersz

Get a full year in there. Less than a year is often a red flag. But definitely start in your “paid job search”.

yeah seems a bit low. Maybe the margins are low as well?

When the hiring tends to be like this, the churn follows and for good reason. The company appears to be trying the "throw everything at the wall and see what sticks" method. To a point, this is tech sales: overpromising and underdelivering to the reps.

Evaluate what your company will likely look like in 6-12 months and make your decision off of that

Thank you for this. It just seems weird that a company wouldn’t want to double down and support people who have shown they can close deals as opposed to hiring/training. Especially at this comp they’re not exactly attracting tremendous talent.

Sounds like your company uses the dangling carrot routine. They dangle the carrot in front of you that you can make 120 but really you will make 90 if lucky, and because the hiring market is company driven right now they are taking advantage and see you as easily replaceable. Do with that what you want and you can treat it as a stepping stone without an ounce of guilt
