Am I justified?

Whattup savages. I have a question that is a bit tailored for the sales leaders in the WR.

Long story short, I am trying to understand if I am justified in asking for a promotion/raise. I KNOW I KNOW it never hurts to ask, but I figured I’d throw out feelers beforehand. Ya know… gauge my level of disappointment.

For context, I am one of the longest tenured reps on our team and was promoted 8-9 months ago. My conundrum is that I did not hit quota last year, although not to say that I didn’t close a few strategic deals. My reasoning for asking for this is because I have done so many things far beyond a typical sales rep role (at least in my company) within the last 8-9 months. I have become one of the go-to trainers for new reps and SDRs, I’m currently working on the 2022 SDR strategy (no SDR mgr right now.. long story), and I am always the rep asked to review new sales/ops products and sit on demos. All of the things I’m doing ultimately benefit me in the end, but it’s definitely been a lot; sometimes feeling like I took on a second role.

SO with the information above, how justified should I feel by asking for a raise?

Your time spent on these activities goes above and beyond your standard role, and is valuable.   Perhaps a bump in base rate is warranted.   They may say no, because making your number is a key indicator and it might be the determining factor in the success of your request.

To piggyback on this, if they say no, ask them to get someone else to do it. You are spending non-selling time, and need either a KPI base pay component or a high base salary to cover that time.

My other thought was how much the time spent on working on these projects takes away from the ability to meet quota - which he missed.

That’s a good point I didn’t even think of. The last month alone has probably been 25-30% devoted to these other activities vs my actual job. Thanks for the advice!

I would definitely ask to be compensated accordingly.  The time and focus away from your "paying role" definitely cost you sales dollars and commission.

If you’re inclined to mgmt (especially if there is a vacancy) you could ask to be considered for a SR role or the mgmt spot too. Especially if your efforts have been geared that way anyways. 25-30% on non-SDR activities AND still almost hitting quota speaks to a devoted work ethic.
