I was a freight broker for 3 years before moving into SaaS. Sometimes I miss being verbally abused on the phone by truckers... good times

I used to recruit for transpo...I miss calling a business and having some old dude grunt into the phone as a greeting.

Absolutely love the new swear words they teach me... one time a guy said he would cut off my fingers if we weren't on time, and he was so serious I threw up in my mouth a little

Oh man... you must be sooooooo dead inside. I personally think its great because no one can eat your lunch as customers can in logistics. It's like going through the marine corp in sales.

Relationships are more important than almost every other element.ย  Issues are gonna happen, it's just a matter of how well you communicate with the shipper and that they trust you.ย  I like to 'take full responsibility for...' especially when it's not all my fault, shows honesty and people appreciate someone who owns up to their mistake or perceived mistakes... Feel free to ask any questions, I'm not afraid to admit if I don't know, but I can always find someone who does know the answer in my company.

No marketing, mayo isn't an MQL
Did a 6 month stint at a digital freight forwarding startup. They sold me on the platform and the sexy e-commerce customers.ย

Ended up calling small manufacturing firms who used paper and could give zero fucks if it wasn't cheaper.ย

Yea, price is how you get in the door to build that relationship... gotta take an L usually to get rolling and then build up from there.

Yep, had a hard-on for margins though. If price was ever mentioned their response was just 'sell them on value'

Sell on value. They don't give two shits about value! They're writing BOL's on paper for God's sake!?!

Also add on that the market is just fucking insane right now with it being like 10x the cost to ship something westbound from China as it was a year and a half ago.ย

Every Karen out there always complains that they are having to pay more, but they decided to play the spot market instead of having a long term contract.ย

Absolutely, the same people saying 'take a hike' last year were reaching out to me for capacity this year.ย  2018 was crazy with EDL roll out but this is something waaaay different.

Based on how many boats I see stuck outside the Long Beach port...and consequently, how backed up most of my shipments are, I can't imagine the calls that most salespeople are getting in this biz right now.ย

I sell into the Logistics space and let me tell ya, hard as fuck.

Such an old school industry that is not okay with change. Starting to make a smidge of headway with older folks transitioning out but gawd damn.

I didn't believe it when I started but relationships are such a big part of our industry.ย  At the EOD we are all using the same pool of trucks and rates are usually in a ballpark but the reason some do better than others is connection.ย  Some unsolicited advice here; when you call, talk to the shipper about anything and everything other than freight.ย  When they finally say, what'd you call for again?ย  Your relationship will be on a good foot and you've already earned some trust.

Daaaamn yes. Especially long term, even the big customers are looking at the bottom line and be like โ€œcan you remove the tech, itโ€™s expensive?โ€

Do you at all deal into Europe? Since us brits introduced brexit we have completely messed up the whole transportation import/export system to lots of countries - that and COVID. I work in tech aimed towards the retail sector and I know first hand we brits screwed it! Has any of that affected you or your industry?

My condolences... I've just heard the horror stories about working in the freight industry. I've seen the rates sky-rocketing lately anyways and everybody getting squeezed in the middle.ย

No such thing as bad lanes, just bad rates!ย  The biggest reason for shelves starting to be empty, the cost to move the 20 different brands of hand soap has tripled and the manufacturers aren't willing to take L's...until they get paid more for that same soap
