They call me Daddy, Sales Daddy
I never tell them what I make (made). I tell them what compensation I am targeting.

My current employer never even asked, just asked me what I wanted. They agreed so quickly I am thinking I should have asked for more.

Anyway, this is a great point. You're not going to be doing the old job or working for that company. This is a new job and role.

SUCH a good move. idk why we always feel like we need to tell them what we made last.

Last time I was asked that I responded to the recruiter with "idk why that is really relevant but I would be really interested to know what the salary range is for THIS role."

Amazing answers, thanks for these tips. I'm sick of saying what I make just to get lowballed into this lower base salaries.

@jefe Yeah, that's the way I play it now but with a new baby, time isn't on my side during this specific search.

Thanks, @Diablo. Crazy for sure, I thought that was the point of FMLA. But I guess its to let your top sales reps go.

Which makes it a great site for reps. You get a better look at many companies and it can help you either filter for the ones you want to pursue and/or do additional research once you do get a nibble.

Look at your experience, and think "What company would value this the most"

then look for those types of companies. dont wait for ppl to come to you.

Look for companies that are in your mind, a good fit, and reach out.

@TennisandSales Yeah for sure, I've actually had much better fits this time around with "competitors" of my experience. That seems to be a goldmine move right now. My other experiences before my last were more generic skills.

Research. Use Repvue. Say "other companies I'm talking to are in the 300 OTE range. Is that about where you are?" Don't come with "these guys are only paying me 65K" stuff.

I think this is a journey. Once you have sold your value already and you've made sure you have communicated what you have achieved and what you are capable, it's easy to position the top offer requirement.

I am usually frank towards the end that this is what I am looking for. So it might or might not make sense to the interviewer based on my previous pay, but it needs to make sense based on my value.
