Career advice needed - am I too old to switch industries?

36 years old and a sales manager at a media company - we sell banners and lead-gen and custom articles…feels like the model is getting old and maybe might not have too much runway.

Been with the company 7 years and it’s the only sales job I ever had - got lucky making a leap from their content creation side into sales and worked my way up the sales chain.

OTE is $125k - best path forward is shoot for a publisher role in a few years and maybe make $150k

The comp numbers that get thrown around sales communities are insane to me - I don’t see a route into tech without starting at the bottom and the space is saturated/in turmoil.

Any advice on where to take my career to make that next level money $200k+ is much appreciated. Thank you

I would give my left testicle to be your age again. You're never too old for anything. As long as you have the motivation and ability, what's stopping you? Don't limit yourself to one industry, you'll be disappointed in the long run. I'm out of the game and don't have much more to offer, but you sound like you're smarter than the average bear, so keep your head on a swivel, and quietly look for opportunities outside of your comfort zone. Best of luck.

Side note- I hopped over to software from broadcast media with grey hairs. You ain’t even in the danger zone. Bow up and chase it. You might just surprise yourself.

Never too old. You likely have some crucial market insight that you could parlay into a role with a tech company in the media space.

Think creatively. What companies are creating products and services that are making said model old?

Not too old at all! You’re young, honestly. If it helps, I changed jobs 2 years ago, and I am not as young as I feel.

no for sure not too old. the way I see it, you could make a pivot into digital marketing tech. do you sell to marketing teams now?

there are a number of lead gen companies that you might be a good fit for, or SEO tech, things like that.

If you can carefully leverage your existing experience, you have the opportunity to rocket ship your career.

Three years ago, I was 38 and started my tech sales career as an SDR intern. Became an SMB AE pretty quickly and got to about $80k. I cleared a bit over $250k last year.

Age is just a number my friend and 36 is not old at all unless you consider yourself to be one ;)

All the best !

I’ve been selling for 5+ years. Have been in selling SAAS for the last year or so. Looking for a individual sales coach to help with the transition. I see a lot of sales academy that I can buy but I’m looking for 1:1 sales coaching. Anyone have any recommendations?
