Career pivot into SAAS Sales - Advice?

Hey everyone!

I crossed out my original post, why? Because I learned a lot from the folks below in the comments and thought to restructure my original post to give you value, immediately, as future people will most likely come looking for the same answers to this question.

If you're pivoting into Sales - these posts have been extremely helpful to me so far to understand the various paths, roles, interview process, and other things that you might find interesting

Sales Career Paths - All about what roles do what, how much experience you need and what a career path would look like - https://bravado.co/academy/sales-career-paths

Acing the SDR interview - All about how to get to that first interview, what it could be like, how to frame your mindset and resume (even if you have zero sales experience prior) and everything else surrounding interviews - https://bravado.co/academy/sdr-interview

Negotiating Base Comp and OTE - Everything about navigating a totally new compensation structure that we've not known before as your salary is cut in half pretty much and you're given a task to fill your OTE in order to get that other half (and then some!) - https://bravado.co/academy/negotiating-sales-comp

Sales Compensation 2022 Guide - Everything about $$$ - https://bravado.co/sales-compensation-2022

These are the initial articles I've read in the past hour after learning a whole bunch from everyone in the community. I'll keep going now but checkout the academy section here for more - https://bravado.co/academy/category/all-articles

Thank you again to all of you that chimed in – I still have a long way to go to get to my first interview but you guys certainly accelerated that path to learning all of this, and I so appreciate it!

My name is Jonathan and I'm looking to get into my first role in sales. I thought to post some questions for you all as this seems to be a really knowledgeable and friendly community –

  • What advice would you have if you were in my shoes?
  • What SAAS companies would you recommend checking out?
  • If you were in my shoes, would you start at an SDR/BDR role first? Or go for an AE role? (Or do I even have a choice?)
  • What resources would you recommend that I look into next?

To give you a bit of background on me: I have 14 years of professional experience as a product manager in international sales training and tech world, startup founder, professional photographer, etc., and have always been selling in those capacities, although I’ve never taken a sales role before. Friends and family have always encouraged me to get into sales and honestly, I love talking on the phone to strangers and making deals. I’ve been a long-time follower of Sandler Sales Institute (don't know if this method is out of fashion now?) and have been listening to his audio courses for years now.

I'd be happy to also jump on a call if you would rather help in that way instead of writing out a response. Either works for me! - Edit: Ok! No calls! Crossed out but leaving here for reference

Any insight you could give would be helpful! Thank you!

Jonathan

Hey - this late in the day I'm going to give you a bit of help and not a full response (been a looong day for me). There are a TON of posts asking this question in general. Do some searching and see what's been advised for some generic suggestions.

And while the "I'll hop on a call" is an interesting suggestion, the vast majority of the members are anonymous and highly likely to stay that way, so that's not going to work. The free career consulting probably won't extend that far.

Also, the responses and engagement are what keeps this forum alive and legit, not offline interaction.

Finally, "SaaS sales" isn't really a thing. SaaS is a delivery model for software, and an incorrect buzzword on LinkedIn. You're interested in tech sales, which is a huge category. Try to figure out what interests you in general when it comes to tech or software to see if you can refine your own ideas about what might suit you a bit.

Finally (for real this time), there are a lot of posts done by Gasty and CorporateBro about who's hiring that you can search for and find lists of companies that have or had positions. You might start there and see what you find that might be of interest.

This was most patient and kind in the face of so many asking for similar advice. The bunny speaketh the truth. Please jump around using the search bar. But don't ever ask me hop on a call. I care, but not nearly enough to speak to anyone on the phone.

My suggestion is to do the research first. You've got product manager experience in international sales training? I can't imagine that was done with paper and pencil. So, you've got SaaS experience and didn't know it.You've got a resume claim to make.

Take that and see what sort of role you can find that has a scope that's applicable. Dial it in. Then swing back when you know what sort of gig you're really hunting.

Good luck!

@oldcloser- The same goes for you as I said to Bunny, thanks for taking the time to write a response to my apparently very common and noob post. I seriously appreciate it as I didn't expect to get a single comment.

Learnings for me here –
-> Don't suggest calls
-> I guess I do have Tech sales experience, in a different capacity. How to frame it is something I'll work on next
-> Continue researching for roles that I might want to pursue based on my experience and desire in the sales world

Thanks again and have a great rest of your day!

Noob shmoob. First post hazing is normal. Glad you replied. And yes, somewhere out there there's a company who would benefit from having someone with your experience in their sales department. Your product experience is gold.

Oh, war room etiquette- if you like a post or comment, kindly upvote it. Best of luck to you!

@oldcloserThat's a good angle to look at it from and I'll work on framing it that way when reaching out to job postings. I think you definitely have a good point there. Thank you again for taking the time to point this out!

I got you on the upvote and everyone else that is commenting on here - I really appreciate this community the more and more I read through posts and threads. I have a feeling I'll be spending more and more time here as my job search continues!

@Sunbunny31- Thank you for taking the time to write all of this out! I appreciate it.

Learnings for me here –
-> Search is my friend
-> Don't suggest calls
-> Keep it on the platform
-> "Tech Sales" ~~SaaS~~
-> Check out Gasty and CorporateBro posts on who's hiring

Seriously, thanks a lot! Especially after having a long day, I so appreciate you taking the time to explain this. I just signed up for this platform and still getting to know it and the ropes of sales, so thanks for helping a noob out.
