CCO is making a competition on who to promote

Hey guys,

1st time i get an official call for competition. We are 3 AEs and my numbers are number 1 in performance (in J1) now he is doing daily standups.

They mentioned in slack that each AE will lead the sales call once. The daily catch up is something new 15 min long each one does 3mins.

How do I show that Im the most capable in taking the leadership role?

Also im the middle AE there is one who been around 2 3 month before I joined and another guy who joined around 3 months in.

What would you do? How would you lead such "catch ups" and prepare for it?

Appreciate your insights?

That's a 3-minute pipeline display contest. Really a shitty way to pit sellers against each other. No way 2 don't end up hating the 1 who gets the promotion.

If it were me? I'd decline to participate in the promotion contest, but I'd kill the other two with my activity. Tell them, "I'm out of the contest. A leader never tries to make his teammates look shitty. A leader sets the tone and inspires through transparency, competency, and example. I'm here to do that."

Honestly, my activity according to the leaderboard is equivalent to them both combined. Like i own 50% of the company total activity. In terms of onboarding, signups, transactions, revenue should be reflected this month.

Not saying you shouldn't want the role... it may just be your time. Sounds like it is. But what a shitty way to have to step into it. And does it now become your responsibility to run the daily stand-ups?
This whole premise sets you up for a tough entry to leadership.

Right? Not all the standups btw. Each AE will have a day to run the standups for the rest...so I got Tuesday for AE A has Monday and AE C got Wednesday. So very weird.

Sounds like your manager is looking for an out because he doesnโ€™t have enough content to cover all those meetings.

I'd cancel them. Why does the team need daily standups?

Seems like a silly dick measuring competition. I'd go with Brain & Old closer's approach, your performance shows enough competency and time to use the soft skills of leadership

You have to be able to lead a team, help where needed, know when to push and when to lay off. A good manager also operates as the buffer between the VP/CRO and the sales team, and can keep the team working and effective while keeping upper management happy that things are working well. This is greatly oversimplified, but being good at managing a sales cycle is not the same thing as managing a team of people well.

All this. Every last bit. Leaders gotta have broad shoulders and stop the shit when it tries to roll downhill. At the same time they have to be willing to do it when their team is having trouble getting it done.

A lot of it is character. When your team knows youโ€™ll take a bullet for them, the favor is returned. Leaders and managers are not even distant cousins. Managers manage things. Leaders lead peopleโ€ฆ through anything if theyโ€™re good.

I would just focus on my job. Any boss that wants to promote based off of some stupid competition as opposed to your actual job performance and aptitude is a choad and you don't want to be promoted under that person anyway.

I would connect with leadership and hear what makes a good stand-up and incorporate it.
I would ask them hard hitting questions and ask specifics, then put your own spin

Player coach, its not about leading or being a good "leader" its how are you successful and can help your teammates, ask what they need, how can you be a servant leader for them. And an around the horn on whats working whats not see what kind of change you can drive or assist with.

This is kind of toxic, I've always been against inter-team competitions let alone one for a promotion.
How are you being scored? Is this the only opportunity for advancement? What sort of culture is the CCO trying to propagate..?
