Comfortable Rut

Howdy!

I've been working at a great company for 6 years - first sales job ever... rose from account manager, to senior AM, to sales manager - company is great - fantastic people, low pressure, good clients, good product (advertising).

Pay is good, but I hear stories about major money in sales... I made 130K in 2021 and that had a lot to do with tailwind from the pandemic...more like $115K this year.

Love company culture, sleep well at night, never worry about losing my job, genuine relationships with colleagues/managers.... with everything I hear about people being miserable in sales i am on the fence about whether to pursue new industries or other sales jobs to seek out that 150K-250K earning level.

Stay where it is safe, but not as lucrative or pursue more fertile grounds at the risk of greater stress/pressure/instability?

Stay or Go?

I think you should look, but pretty passively. Don't rush into anything, and THOROUGHLY qualify and vet any opportunity before jumping in.

All depends on what you want in life though

this is really hard to give advice because its totally up to what you value.

On one hand, not many people make over $100K so you are doing great. no matter what anyone tells you.

Being comfortable, sleeping well at night no worry about losing your job IS HUGE! dont undervalue that at all.

But

If this was me, id be looking for something different. Especially after 6 years.

I would first be asking for a raise, or looking for promotions to make more money.

If that doesnt work, I would be looking to find the BEST of both worlds. Where can I get a high base, good commission opportunity and low stress.

Now this is almost IMPOSSIBLE to know all of these things with any sort of confidence going into any job, (besides base pay of course) so there is alot of risk.

Just comes down to what you want to value more.

To quote the Notorious BIG "Mo'Money Mo'Problems"

Always nice to look at other positions out there but need to also do what is right for you personally.  Do you want to take on the added stress/challenge and have the fortitude to understand you could fail if you don't give it your all.

I don't think anyone here will have the golden answer for you that will sway you one direction or another.  Just need to understand what is right for you and/or your family.

Sales in inherently high risk/reward.  If you're happy where you are at and comfortable, it may be best to stay.

However, I'm a big believer that often to move up (position, salary, etc.) you need to move out.  So if you have that itch for more - you probably need to move on.

You could definitely be earning more as a sales manager. But as others said, don't rush into anything with the market the way it is.

The items you list as non stressful are worth 25-30k along with the stability you have. Unless you get an insane offer it’s really not worth it, grass is always greener
