Comission Disputes: Comp Plan Questions

Hi All,

Looking for your experiences. In your comp plans, when there is a commission dispute, does HR have the final say? Or do most of you have comp plans where the CRO/CFO is the final decider on a comp plan dispute?

To me, there is a conflict of interest if there is not a third party like HR involved in the process. But I am curious what a majority of people have in their comp plans?

Thanks!

Why would HR have a say in your commission? They are the not the be-all end-all for every issue in your org

It’s all written by legal, approved by Finance, and published by Sales. Approvals go through Finance in most situations, and HR only gets involved when there is gross negligence committed by the company regarding insufficient language. Usually because someone is being let go.

At the end of the day it’s written in your plan regarding who had final approval and discretion in disputes. Read it word for word.

Exactly this. Some companies even have revenue teams specifically designated to manage compensation.

why would HR have ANY say?

It would go to the CRO/CFO almost all the time. if anything, LEGAL should be involved if there needs to be any clarity in how the comp plan is laid out in the agreement.

For us it’s the managers, revops and finance

Echoing what others have said: HR shouldn't have any say unless something has gone massively wrong. It's going to fall into the head of sales/legal department's hands.

Finance typically gets the final say -- your CRO can try and fight for you, but not all of them will. HR really should not be involved (unless it is at the point where you're going to quit over this and file a lawsuit against the company)

It all goes back to the document you signed. What does that say?
