It's pretty much implied that commission plans tend to get worse every year at most orgs.

Fall short of quota = get punished
Crush quota = get punished next year

I joined a new org over the summer and my commission has changed 4 times since then. And trying to settle on a plan for 2023 has been a complete headache.

Bless their hearts if they think I haven’t been interviewing elsewhere.

That is truly wild. No one can focus on selling when they aren’t confident in how much money they will make.

Yeah , it happens all the times especially at inflation times or when company is getting out of business.
Yeah you can try to flee the ship by then only if you got a better opportunity:)

Has pushing back ever worked?

And how bad is it?

Sometimes FLM pushes back because they're reading the mood and see trouble coming, and sometimes that helps.

There have been some minor changes in the structure (twice) this year that reduced our income.

Can you even push back on commission changes? If not, maybe you can negotiate an increase in your base.

My old place changed the commission, there was lots of pushback as it resulted in a loss of earnings for people, they didn’t listen and all of us in the sales function quit…that company no longer have any salespeople and currently rely on the marketing team

My previous company lost 90% of the sales team within 9 months of the new comp plan being released. VP of Sales was the patsy and got fired but the CRO stayed on.

Sounds like that worked out well for everyone. What a mess.

I have pushed back before but it’s never helped.

I have only seen the push to get it paid quarterly/monthly to the other. If there is a shift, ask why. If it wasn’t for someone breaking the numbers by crushing too hard, there would need to be an explanation

Companies only course correct when there is too much attrition and sales start slipping. Otherwise, upper management will double down.

Same! The attrition has gone up drastically, because the comp plan has gone down!

Some major changes happened last quarter in my company, and people are pissed!!

If the experience is important, stay and mint however much money you can! Then jump ship.

If experience isn't that important here, jump ship now. We need to make money to stay motivated, so you'd want to be in a firm that allows you to stay motivated.
