Comparing two prospective employers - what should i look for?

folks, me again with my interminable questions. i'll stop at some point, i promise! warning: long post.

so, for context, i work in a consultancy (services sales). i got an offer from a large consultancy for a senior role. this is a 4k people company but in the geo where i will be based, they are like a startup. i am the first sales person in this geo. comp is to my expectations, no complaints about it. they are looking for aggressive growth.

let's call this Company A.

i did a backchannel (on Linkedin) reference request with a senior sales person in Company A in a different geo, for insight into A and he declined. i specifically mentioned i was interviewing for A. i don't know what to read into that.

Company B is a 70-80 person consultancy into ERP services. founder led. i seem to have good chemistry with them. they have not made an offer yet, but it looks to be heading in that way.

i think my professional life will be easier here because after all the discussions i had in terms of achievable numbers etc (my prev posts on this), they seem to accept that a first year is anyone's guess for a company of their size and history of operations.

i am inclined to go with Company B if they make an offer.

questions:

how would y'all make a decision between two or more companies? what would you look for?

should i ask about work-life-balance at B? will that come across as 'candidate is looking to coast?'

if i accept B's offer (assume they make one), any suggestions on how i break the news to A? fwiw, i told their HR that i am talking to other companies. i have acknowledged receipt of their offer and nothing else.

Before anything else, congratulations! The fact you’re coming here to discuss this even after getting an offer (and about to get a second) just goes to show the commitment aspect.

Your heart is clearly inclined towards B. If company B, is a SeriesA startup, you might want to do some more research, before taking a final decision.

For company A, maybe try a ew more people for references? If all of them decline as well, something’s not right.

I personally think you shouldn’t hesitate in asking company B about work-life balance in a casual manner. If they respond in a negative/unexpected manner, it’s good for you since you wouldn’t want to join such a firm anyway.

Finally, I usually use this question as a hack for considering a new firm:

“Is this the company I’d want to call myself as an alumni of, 10 years later?”

Cheers! And do let us know where you head toward.

@Gasty has it spot on. Congrats on the options!

if and when it comes to making the final decision, then just be professional about it. Thank them for their time and keep the bridges intact.

What @Gasty and @antiASKHOLE said. Also, don’t read to much into the reaction of one reps declining your request. There could be a million reasons for that and it end of quarter. Just to reach out to few others.

this is a great spot to be in.

when it comes to work life balance. do not ask "so what is work life balance like here"

you need to bring up specific situations.

"if I need to schedule a dr appointment at 8:30 and wont be back to my desk till 9:30 how do you expect me to handle that from a calendar perspective"

something like that. their response should give you an indicator of how they feel/what the culture is.

you can let Company A down by saying
" i just want to let you know I have accepted another offer and will not be accepting your offer. I appreciate the time you have invested in me and I hope our paths cross in the future"

idk something like that
