Should I tell a prospective employer that I am expecting another offer?

folks, i am expecting an offer from a company. at the same time, i am also talking to a consultancy for which the role is interesting. seniority, etc.

i have done 3 rounds with execs at this 2nd company and am waiting to hear from them on a presentation i made.

how okay is it to nudge them gently, like, 'i want to be transparent and let you know i am expecting an offer. this is not to pressure you. i like you folks, like your mission and if there's a chance we can discuss terms reasonably quickly, i would appreciate it'

If it’s me I wait until I have said offer and then say
Ive really enjoyed connecting with your team and learning about the role. I received offer from another company but I feel i’de be a better fit make a bigger impact with your team. How can we come to a comparable comp plan at your company?

@PineappleYa would you accept the other offer before having this conversation or would you buy time from that offer-making org to progress this second conversation?

Why would you accept the offer? You ask for time to review and consider, and negotiate if you need to.

Agreed @Sunbunny31, best not to go back on your word if you can avoid it.

IMO I’d save this kind of tactic until you’ve been waiting too long. Have to give ‘em the “hot girl” treatment. Make them come to you.

I've leveraged receiving another offer to put some pep in the step of the company I really wanted to work for before. I would wait until you actually have the offer in hand though. You don't want something to fall through with that offer, and then company B deciding they aren't interested in you because they think you're just going to take the other offer anyway

No. Wait until you receive said offer in hand. What if you don't get the offer and then you pissed these folks off too? Could end up with nothing. 🤷‍♀️

An interview goes both ways... and I think transparency sells. "I am very interested in your organization and see a lot of potential for both of us. However, I am down the road with another organization that I also can see a lot of potential and they are currently working on an offer. What can we do to explore this opportunity in an expedited manner to see if we are a fit for each other?" Good luck.

I would urge you to receive the offer first and then rebuttal that you're weighing your options. Use that as leverage to negotiate the terms of your employment.

In honesty I have in-fact accepted an offer from the company that was plan B while awaiting company A and requested more … I got job A . But you have to determine what’s best for you… if company B could be valuable for you later even if you don’t take the job then tread lightly
