Consultative Selling Overview

Hope everyone is staying strong during these layoffs! I am a Marketing and Business Analytics student and have been on this site for awhile and you all have given some great insight that has made me want to pursue a full-time sales role after graduation. Due to the nature of my degree, I often have to do case studies on companies (ex. how to better segment prices for the Minnesota Wild's online ticket sales) that I find extremely satisfying.

This has made me want to find a sales role that is more based on "consultative sales" (a happy mix between being a consultant and sales rep) and that can maybe use some of my data analytics skillset as well. Would love insight on specific industries/companies/roles I should maybe take a look at.

(Does not need to be in business analytics, just wanted to throw that out there as that is a skillset in my toolbox)

Many sales roles now fall into the consultative approach once you're a rep. However, bear in mind that many companies will want to start you out as a BDR/SDR and that is much more quantitative. If you do go down this path, view BDR as a means to an end as you learn about the solution, your ICP, etc.

That said, most software platform sales teams are consultative. Sales cycles, even at MM, tend to be a bit longer, and you'll spend more time with your prospect. And to follow along with detectivegibbles, maybe a data analytics company will check all your boxes.

It is starting to look like software platform sales may be a very attractive opportunity. But I also want to ensure that I am able to see other opportunities that may not be readily seen at the surface level as well, any come to mind?

I've been in software sales for over 20 years, so I'm not the best resource for this question. Hopefully others in other industries will chime in.

I just love the fact that war room has shaped your thinking into pursuing a sales career, which might not be very common for a marketing and analytics student.

Most sales roles (especially in tech) are by design consultative in nature.

What you might want to leverage is your analytics background and see where the overalls are with sales Development and sales.

The company i worked for earlier had its head of analytics, laterally move to head of revenue - just laying it out here

Yeah I wish the war room was accessible/known to more college students. Really opened my eyes to the opportunities available for those who love selling.

I would love to connect further and learn maybe how I can leverage my skillset data analytics skillset for sales, do you mind if I PM you?

If you're wondering if I respond to PMs or not, the answer is a big, fat "heck yeah!" I make it my mission to get back to everyone before the sun rises again.

Also, if you know other cool cats like you who are interested in sales and want to join war room, you can invite them using your referral link (top right corner, click on your DP)

For every referral that signs up, we pay you 100 commish points. In fact, referrals are the easiest way to earn war room commish. Just ensure you invite people who can add value to the war room!

Also, if they apply for a job through Bravado and get placed, then you and your referral will receive a whopping $1000 each!

Sales Rep
Based on wanting to use Data Analytics, my assumption would be Business Intelligence and Analytics Software company's like Tableau. Never worked in that industry but assume you can show customers how to analyze their data and create dashboards that provide actionable insights.

This is great! I will definitely keep an eye out for openings with the likes of those. Is there any companies/industry that may use this consultative skillset outside of the data analytics world that come to mind?

Maybe look at data analytics companies that need sales people?

I appreciate the insight, is there any companies in particular that you believe treat their reps pretty well in that space?

This is when you can go look at Glassdoor and Repvue and see what's out there and get an overall sense of the position in the market.

A big part of success in sales role is resonating with your prospects. I've seen people who are extremely successful selling to one type of prospect crash and burn when they work with different personality types.

If Biz/data analytics interest you, find an org who's product solves a problem for them. When you "get" your prospects, things are much much easier!

Good luck!

Admittedly, I am a bit biased, the Healthcare Information Technology space is very strong. With ML, AI, and some even newer technology around the corner, analytics sales might be worth exploring. Clinical, financial, and operational facets are all jumping these days.

Healthcare IT would be an amazing industry to break into. I am over at Minnesota so we have a lot of cool spaces nearby although it seems pretty opaque on the hiring practices at the moment for early talent. Definitely will be keeping my eyes out if I do find an opportunity in that space!

Specification Sales
Architectural sales in general (like lighting sales which I do) are a great combination of consultative selling and traditional sales. Many jobs are $100,000+ base and offer good commission.

Salaries are lower but more reliable at manufacturers.

Working for a sales rep that reps the manufacturers results in total como from $150,000-$1,000,000 Iโ€™d say depending on what market youโ€™re in etc

Consultative selling is not some sort of mix. It is a proven process for enhancing clients profits. And when that is accomplished, success for both parties is achieved.

You may want to focus on roles that are looking for business analysts and require customer facing, requirements gathering, etc. Not actual sales roles.

Good choice, however you need then to find a company that has a solid Pre-Sales department and tbh, I'm not sure in this case if that will let you maintain the same payout for not participating that deep in the sales cycle or in the close rate so it may not be that satisfying money wise I believe, you can still try it for a couple of month and see how it works, if it was not as you were expecting you could change back to your last role or a better role, much of luck!
