Discovery Call with a potential competitor ?

okay this obviously doesn't happen too often, but I have a discovery call that someone was pushing to get on my calendar (booked it himself). I tried pushing it off but he was consistent. I am now having this call but I am thinking they do what our company does, at a much smaller scale (not actually a competitive threat, but nonetheless). tips on a polite way to say we cannot move forward because our use cases overlap?

Take it to your manager. Be very transparent with this. Seriously. You don’t want this to come back to haunt you.

Yep, as everyone else has said, be honest and open.

I'm interested in why he wants to talk to you, however. Might be trying to get through to an exec or something to discuss partnering or...?

It's either that, a severe misunderstanding of OP's product/service, or it's recon.

Be to the point and explain him why you cannot move forward. I am sure he will understand.

I would say just that.

"to be honest we cant move forward because our use cases overlap"

dont make it harder than it needs to be.

I'll echo the point of being upfront and honest.
I had a new startup approach me and start asking a lot of questions and even asking for training. They were small and wouldn't have been much competition so I told them I would and quoted a huge amount of money and stated that it has to make financial sense if I'm going to train someone that could then turn around and drink my milkshake. Never heard from them again 🤷🏻‍♂️
