Do you have to prospect internally to get promoted?

The RD in charge of AEs expects anyone who wants to be considered for AE to prospect into him.

From what I've heard, he'll willfully ignore internal candidates until they call/slack him repeatedly. Basically HOUND him so he cannot possibly ignore you.,

Is this normal behavior?

I think that's egotistical horseshit, personally. Career progression should be management agnostic and performance based. Meritocracy is probably a fantasy, but somewhere close would be healthier than that garbage.

There's obviously a balance here. You can't expect to sit on your hands and be given a personal invitation to move up...but on the other hand it shouldn't be like this. lol

He wants to know you really want it, so expecting some outreach is fine.

But if its to the extent he can't ignore you, that's probably a bit much. I would look for ways to go around him.

Yes, unfortunately. You have to keep talking to folks to understand status of the openings, your position inside the company, the rapport you build with the other teams - all this is important.

Nobody is going to hand you a role just like that (unless you are supremely good). Corporate has mad competition everywhere, even in being stupid. So you got to sell yourself.

I personally think this is a selfish hoax. Career advancement should be based on management and performance. Meritocracy may be a fantasy but somewhere close to it is healthier than worst.
