Do you help your team hire new team mates?

Whaddup? New year over here and I'm getting looped in to help hire some AE's and SDR's at my company. We have a 4 stage interview process. The parts I'm involved with are the mock demo or cold call and the personality fit.

We could definitely use some new blood, since we acquired a company this fall and have more to offer now to our market.

I'm curious how many of you end up getting involved in the hiring process for your teams. And are there any curveballs you like to throw?

Do you help participate in the hiring process for your company?

I don’t like curveballs. I’d rather ask questions and learn about the rep and their style. I want to hear about their favorite deal (should get them enthusiastic) and something that challenged them. I want to hear about their experience to get a gut feel about the person so I will have confidence they’ll benefit the company and the team.

And I ask myself: if I had to turn over one of my best accounts to this person, do I trust it will be taken care of and closed?

This always wins over a stupid mock call or free work. You can see passion when they are comfortable - not worried over some pretend situation.

Love the favorite deal Question - it gives tons of insight too, into how to motivate a rep.

Since there is a wide range of backgrounds in the company, I like to give opinions since I know some of the personas that we are targeting better than anyone else on team. Why set someone up for failure and have to run the process again?

I join interview panels for new AE’s as well as reps selling the more specialized products in my group specifically. We have zero need to hire new folks but I am hoping it sheds a positive light on me with management should we end up looking at cuts down the line.

Absolutely I like getting involved! No curveballs for me, I like to ask a lot of clarifying questions after their answers to typical interview questions so I can see how they think on their feet and get away from their “interview personality”.

when i was on a team quota, i was very concerned about who was on the team.

when I wasnt, i really didnt care too much and wouldnt bother getting involved.

BUT if you think getting into management is in your future, being involved is a good idea just o learn more about the process and how to vet talent.

Yes I help and train them afterwards. I quite like it too. I think an SM position would really fit me because of this.

I'd happily like to be a part of the hiring / choosing process if it is my team and I am an important part of the team.

I probably would want to know how they prospect into accounts / close deals. Is their way of working the same as mine - or is closer to mine? If so, it would be a smooth collaboration.

If not, I would be afraid to hire them because most bandwidth would be spent in just finding a common ground.

I would rather be able to ask a few questions to see how disrupted my bubble is going to be.

I have interviewed candidates for positions both above and below.

For sales personnel I like to understand their motivators, learning styles and preferences, favorite achievement and why. If you are helping I would look at character questions or have a lunch with them to see their interactions. Most of the time I have been able to train someone if they had a strong character, but if you sense bad character you are probably right and move on.

I think your process is long, as I would not interview if a company told me that it was a 4 step process; so personally I would not do that to someone else.
