Does your VP of Sales cold call?

Mine does but very rarely.

I feel like some feel like they're above it and others only do it if they have to. However, I feel like there is definitely some element of avoiding embarrassment.

Would this inspire you to hit the phones if you saw the big cheese leading the charge?

VP of sales should be doing big picture things and chasing down the whale deals. To me at least, it doesn't make sense to pay a VP salary to have someone cold call when I could just have SDRs.

Especially at larger orgs.
If they do, it's usually performative. Can sometimes motivate but I'm generally unconvinced.

For sure, I'm not saying for prospecting new business but those deals that got further along into the pipeline and went casper without an explanation.
I feel like that's when a VP should pick up the phone and step up. But again, I'm a noob :P

Ah, got it. I could definitely see situations where the VP gives them a ring if we felt the deal had progressed nicely and there had been good traction, only for it to go dark out of nowhere.

I don't think of that as a cold call. That's progressing a deal - that's for them to coach you on and to lend a hand where needed.

Yes, and mine will absolutely get on the phone with prospects. Any of our execs will, as a matter of fact.
But cold dialing outbound? Nope.

No, he’s a worthless, narcissistic douche so he doesn’t actually do anything.

so he just tells you to update salesforce?

LOL, sadly that would be a blessing. More like constantly slacking and asking about the same deals 2 million times a week. Can’t tell if he’s that stupid or has early onset dementia

Not my vp, but my direct manager got on the line after we started slowly. Gained a ton of respect from me for doing so.

If this is a sub 5 person start-up team, sure they should be involved, but it's the role.

they should be thinking strategically. However, they should get the feedback that people have on the phone. But not by doing CC's themselves

They better not be - I need them for strategic calls and to light fires under the asses of folks internally.

They call me Daddy, Sales Daddy
Every Organizatin is different. In some a VPS is an army of 1. In others, he leads 100 people and is focused on management items. He hires others to make the cold calls. And hopefully he's paid his dues by making the cold calls himself earlier in his career (like myself).

Mine does not and admittedly probably won't in the near future. Would love to see however my manager hop on the phones at some point

Lead by example, I say. Most VP don't do that once they get to that level. I remember when the Sr VP went out into the field and stated when he return to the company at a meeting,"he forgot how tuff it was outside the company."
