ent bdr to smb ae w/pay cut?

hey, haven't posted here for a bit.

currently have an offer for a SMB-focused AE role that has an OTE around $80k, with accelerators showing a clear path to $100k+ exists, and allegedly several reps are reaching/exceeding $100k.

im currently an enterprise bdr with an OTE around $95k in a company that... has no idea who their enterprise customers are, and im not seeing a path to continuing to reach quota.

worth taking the pay cut for the full cycle experience?

Getting an AE title will be beneficial for future moves. What's the path to that like at your current gig? Also, you mention current OTE, but if you're not hitting then that means nothing. What are you actually making right now?

If they don't know what they're doing then that could be a signal to leave.

I'd hinge an answer on 2 things. 1. How long you've been in the current seat? 2. Can you pay your bills on the base at the new one?

If 1 year + in your current role and you can live on the lower base, I'd say make the move. This... with all things being as advertised in the new role. I'd look to verify the 100k claim. Ask them to show you. If they won't, find an AE on LinkedIn and call them. Career progression isn't overrated.

Are you achieving the 95k OTE in the current role? is there any wiggle room from the AE company to give you 5k more on the base and 5 k more on OTE?

Career progression even with the pay slice looks great, it doesn't need to be forever.

I did this exact transition with more or less the same % pay cut and it paid off massively. Getting the AE experience is worth far more, and it will open you up to higher salary ranges almost immediately.
