Entering the final round of interviews — what’s next?

Working on transitioning out of my professional sales role in digital marketing to a more long term Saas careeer. I am finishing up my interviews with three different companies and I'm spun on a loop what direction to go:

Company A: nitche Saas company, around 100 employees and looking to double/triple in size over the next few years. Hybrid BDR role with some opportunists to help input on the marketing side as well as take on my own deals >45k annually. AE within 6-12 months with lots of opportunity, but it's a smaller sales team (I'd be BDR #2) and it seems like they don't have everything figured out with their process. Product is really effective, technical with long sales cycles, and a bit dated, rolling out a new version within the next few months. 55k base, OTE around 70k.

Company B: Fin tech, saas sales. 150 employees with a modern, slick product that sells itself. Also a smaller sales team with about 5 people on it. I would be running rull cycle sales start to finish, which I'm really comfortable with. However, no one feeding me leads other than a growing stream from marketing. Great benefits, 90k base, but no commission outside of equity in the company. But, I'm not sure what this role grows into.

Comapny C: Unicorn start-up, 700 employees, currently one main product / software, but I would be joining their new team helping launch their new product. Mixed feelings about my manager as he has been really hard to read / flat throughout this process but definitely has a ton of experience in sales. Not sure if he isn't excited / what is going on there but it makes me a bit uneasy. Great opportunity at a good company, I would be the first BDR on this team and have seniority moving forward, but there is a lot of figuring out to do with this product. Manager spoke about an AE role within 6 months to take "selling" off his plate as much as possible. 50k base, 65k OTE.

To add to the excitement, my wife is due with our first baby here in about a week. Company A, and C would likely be a slight pay cut from my current role while getting a bit of a raise if I go with Company B. Currently around 75k OTE.

I would always go with Full Sales cycle role because from progression point of view it will add more value. If the product sells and if I am getting good amount of leads from Marketing (hope that's converting, not sure if you asked them) I would alway ls go with this but I won't rely on it completely (hunting should be there). No commision sucks but I see base is more than the OTE from other companies.

Love the insight on this. I really like the opportunity there. I guess my only hesitation is the fact that I don’t really know where the growth is the fact! The pay is definitely higher to start, but I also see how my pay might be comparable after transitioning to a standard AE role in those other two spots.

Sure. You might want to do a bit more research, if possible, you can request a quick coffee chat with any of the employees in the org to understand more.

SDR might help me transition to an SDR or AE once I leave but AE will help me transition to AE - MM or Enterprise. You can weight what's more important for you and take a call 🙂. All the best!

B seems like the most secure bet, and with a new baby on the way, maybe taking on additional risk/less money doesn't make sense.

Also, the full cycle sales role is compelling, as is the title.  I'm not totally a fan of no commission for a sales role, but with that nice base, you should be in excellent shape.

Congratulations to you and your wife as well.   I'm kicking myself for not including that in the original post.

Enjoy.  You'll be told many times that it goes fast.  It really does!

I'm liking B, except the no commission portion. Can you stay motivated without it? I, personally, cannot- so that wouldn't be a long term fit for me unless there was some other additional incentive monthly/quarterly/etc.

Good luck, and congratulations on the baby... No matter what job you take I can guarantee you one thing- you're going to be doing it VERY tired for the first few months. ;)

B all day. Not trusting that you’ll like your manager with C us huge. Also kids are flipping expensive, so run with that $$, especially if it’s a solid product. You can figure out the commission piece down the road.

Quite frankly, sounds like company B will be the best for you at the immediate moment and the future. Bump in job title will also lead you to stronger opps in the future as well. This looks like an opportunity to move up in your career instead of laterally.

Maybe the best thing to do is to have a full on benefits conversation with these companies, and see what will help you and your family the most
