Feeling Burnt Out

Long story short, I'm a BDR at a startup w/less than 40 people. Most of the sales team got let go late last year, and I recently became the last salesperson in our org. I got hired a year ago, brand new in tech sales.

My company now wants me to lead meetings, attend live events, and do way more than a BDR does. Keep in mind I'm on salary but no commission. I'm still new at tech sales and don't have the experience to lead large partnership calls, and I've had 0 training since joining. My job is super flexible, but there are a ton of issues around product market fit, leadership, and compensation.

Makes me want to leave tech sales. Do you think working at a larger company with the resources to train reps and help them would change my perspective? Sorry, a lot of this is a rant.

Of course. Sales process is very important in any company. Did you discuss your pain with your manager?

I brought up the idea of promotion to my CEO if I were to handle new duties and got the run around. No yes or no, a wait and see kind of thing.

I might tell them you are going to wait and see if you are going to do all these new responsibilities for the same pay...you're their last sales person? Get set to walk and leave them hanging high and dry IMO, they need you more than you need them if they aren't paying you for all the work.

You need to have a serious discussion with your mngt on the scope of your role, assuming you want to stay. But without Sales people, howโ€™s the company drumming up new business?

Sounds like a sinking ship and itโ€™s time to jump.

We have a small product market fit. Our bread and butter is B2C which is driven by Marketing. Our B2B/B2E is still in development and no real business.

If you are salary only, use your PTO to recharge. Not like your missing out on potential commissions.

I like this idea, vacay and fuck em. Clean up the resume while sipping pina coladas on the beach/at the pool.

Gotta negotiate a better offer ASAP, or leave em for good and find another place that appreciates you well!

Be honest with leadership. At the same time update the resume and start floating it out to some sales recruiters in your area.

This is not normal for all tech sales. Most BDR/SDR roles have some flavor of commission, most companies donโ€™t throw novices to the wolves because they donโ€™t have their shit together. Start applying to other companies and see if you can find one that trains and rewards their sales team.

Ha I was in a super similar situation at my last job. About 20 people in total, sales team consisted of like 4 and I was basically a SDR that had to lead demos as well as cold calling. No training because no one had experience leading before; it was literally a free for all.

You need to leave. Quick. Especially if you aren't getting commission. Training at this stage is critical; you aren't equipped to handle these calls because you haven't been given the tools to succeed. Go to somewhere where there is proven success and start from there. This will likely eventually sink, if it hasn't started already, and there seems to be little reason to stay.

Thanks, that seems to be the plan now.

What do you want to do? Do you want to be in tech sales?

I mean technically you would learn a lot from the calls and events and grow and perhaps be really sought after in the job market in 6 months?

Is it worth the stress?

I have been in a situation where I was responsible for a new project and I don't think the management understood the scope of the work that I was doing so I quit and really there was no career progression. But then I guess that experience helped me to get a job I really liked.

I want to be in tech sales, I just don't have the support I need to learn and grow. I can't go to anyone to ask for feedback on how I run meetings and teach me how to properly run them (Only "sales" folks left are executive level).

I get being on calls and running them is great experience, but I also want to build good habits and make sure my foundation is correct.

Okay that sounds really tough situation. Sorry to hear.

Any executives you could ask? I can understand why not but also suppose there's nothing to lose and they might say yes?

Can you find anyone externally to mentor you? Maybe join meetups or find people on LinkedIn for advice and ask if they'd be willing?

Bravado has some materials as well. Or to explore different sales methodologies and books?

Kevin KD Dorsey has courses on selling on Udemy that I found really useful

Just trying to brainstorm!
