First post: work from home vs 5 days in office

I recently started a role in Mid Market Enterprise in NYC. We are required to be in office 5 days a week, while other sales channels/verticals are mostly on a hybrid schedule, 2-3 days in office and the rest of the week work from home.

How are your your companies approaching requests for WFH? would love to hear feedback..

Not even a couple of days a week? I like a day or two. Makes planning easier.

Curious how does going in the office 1-2 days a week make planning easier?

My company is 100% remote. We have offices but no one is required to go there.

Us to. Mine is a 2-3 hour drive away so unless there's an event or clients visiting I'm here.
And if that's happening, they get me a hotel room.

Sounds like a Manager thing - the person equate being there in person with control and being a good manager.
You need to build trust. You just started so overall trust is very low. Build trust though being there every day, closing business, not needing you manager to crack the whip to make you work, etc... Then you ask for a day here and there for WFH, and build on that.

I've never known the luxury of hybrid or WFH so I can't say. I'm pretty ready to change things up though in that regard but this market sucks.

My company is remote/hybrid. There's a shared office space downtown that they told us we'd start using 2x a month, but so far it's been only once a month.

My desire to put in extra hours is directly related to whether I have to drive home or not. I'll take a 7:30 pm meeting in the comfort of my home, but I probably won't in an actual office. Also, our shared office space is not idea for working. The only private rooms have very high barstool seating with no back support. The only alternative is working out in the open where everyone is talking and there's noise, etc.

I would never go to 5 days a week in-office. I've had at least one since like 2014?
Full remote all the way.

Remote and if they proposed otherwise, I'd challenge my manager to mortal combat.

Fully remote, and hard to envision doing it another way. Maybe hybrid, but my productivity is far superior, and frankly, it's more humane this way.
How is this affecting you? And what were your expectations?

The commute is roughly 1 hour each way. I use the time to read/prep for meetings etc, but it Irks me that other depts get the hybrid model and we don’t. I knew it would be 5 days in office when I accepted the offer, just didn’t realize it didn’t apply to everyone.
I have brought this up to management, and they didn’t seem happy about it. I will make do for now.

I hired a guy for a role that was in office and he lived an hour away. I asked him like 20 times if he would be fine with the commute. A week in he asks about work from home. I tell him no and he spends the next 5 months bitching about not being work from home until he quits. Don't be that guy

Half our team is remote others are local to the office and go in 2-3 days a weeks. Quarterly 3 day onsite meetings for all.

My personal preference is remote with a few face-to-face meetings per year. If you have to do in person then there has to be a reason for it AND structure ( ie workshop, training, planning, collaboration).

Being in the office to do the same thing you can and already do at home is a waste for everybody.

Fully remote - but was hired that way. Good thing, too. Our office is 2,119 miles from here with a commute time of roughly 32 hours by car.
So to make this actually relevant, I did work for a company where I went to the office every day, but the office was in my town, and it was no commute. We then got acquired and the office was shut down, and we were moved to the city, which was over an hour each way. I was able to negotiate a hybrid role because of the commute and my performance. Maybe over time you'll be able to point to your stellar performance and the conversation will be easier.
Do you know why your team is fully in office? And the other teams - is it manager preference that they are hybrid, or they are Enterprise/Strategic and travel to customers? Or something else?

Likely because of underperformance as a team. I feel an impending storm of micromanagement brewing already..

Full time in the office though 50% of my time is spent travelling on the road.
I did not bond well with wfh, way to adhd or something.

That sucks. Why did you take that role? It says a lot about your ceo/boss that they don’t give a shit about your future financial freedom or autonomy

Do you work remotely or at the office? Would you quit your job if you had to go to the office full time? I’d quit immediately. Well as soon as I found another job 😂. Currently, I’m working from home I go to the office once in a while. I can work from any country. I went to the beach for 3 weeks and just took two days off to recover from a festival.
