Follow up on Jobs

Recently I posted about a new job experience and considering leaving or staying because I am not sure the grass is greener and perhaps it will get better with time/experience. This crew provided a lot of great perspective so I would like to follow up.

My old job is hiring for my position again. I have a lot of experience with their product and the role and the in's and outs. I am considering applying as I feel like rather than training a new guy in a niche product, bringing me back on would make sense in a lot of ways. Clean slate-I learned so much being gone- yada yada. I would go back because the supervisor I had was great and wouldnt mind running with him again.

Just not sure if it would be smart in the long run or not. While I am struggling where I am at now, the company did not do any major layoffs during the pandemic and seems stable over all.

Plus, while I could look at it like a clean slate, I am not sure if the prev. employer would. I was a good worker for them, I believe I was just lured into being active into culture development with HR and as such ended up in a few conversations that likely turned people off even though I was good at what I did.

Has anyone navigated this before? Part of me is turned off to the idea of a return solely because I got dumped once before. The other part of me really like the team and had a certain comfort level, plus there have been some leadership changes... Change is hard but can be valuable in my future but familiarity with a product I am selling over re-inventing the wheel feels important too.

Take it if they give you a bunch of money.

I doubt I could negotiate for a bunch more. They are a fairly small company (at least compared to where I am now). It would be at where I am at now cept more familiarity with the product.

The job I am at now definitely has a more promising trajectory if I can make things happen. The old job has some good positions but they are all held by some senior employees that I doubt would ever leave.

Felt this to my core. Previous employer wants to bring me back on but the money isn't worth it IMO. I'll grow more in current role with more responsibility and challenges.

IMO, I'm with @SaaSguyand @CuriousFox- if the money is legit, sounds like a win win for both sides.

I have not done this before but depending on how they trreated you on the way out and the value they would see in you ($$) I would say go after it, otherwise there are plenty of fish in the sea (to use your dumped/relationship terminology)

Well the direct boss was great. The hire ups and HR who made the decision literally were just going to throw something on my calendar Friday morning and say, hey, you are getting laid off. The manager was cool enough to at least give me a heads up that it might be coming.

How long has it been since you were there?

And considering you were laid off, would they take you back? Was it a layoff due to economic downturn, or for other reasons you'll need to address with them?

And finally, will it be for enough money to make it worth your while to pursue?

Been about 6 months. I think they would be. They sell a fairly complex product, I have extensive knowledge on how they operate and how the product works. When I left, it wasnt on performance and the HR rep said they would consider it.
I think it was a few fold, ambitious but mis-set goals based on what they thought the market would do and as I said earlier, because I was active in the culture, I was naturally in more convos than the average with HR and learned the hard way that HR is not your friend 90 percent of the time. Lastly when interest rates rose, it slowed down some from seeking business financing.

Salary would be about what I am paid now. I think commissions would be easier initially since I am familiar with the product and could get right back in it. The current job looks like it has more guaranteed potential since the old job hasn't expanded enough to allow for upward mobility in a while. Just the new job has some challenges I dont love about it and I have to learn from the bottom up on the product.

So what's the overall upside for trying to go back? Presumably more commission, as you won't need to ramp?

1. I get along better with the boss,
2. Confidence and Familiarity with what I am selling.
3. Easier time hitting commissions as they will likely give me a ramp to build my pipeline but I will have more familiarity with the product.
4. The new job, feeling like I am starting from ground zero, its a big corporate animal compared to the smaller company. Also I dont see eye to eye with the leadership and how they run things. I may get more used to it but just uneasy.

I want back and it was okay. However, now a bit later I understand it was a huge risk.

so the ppl you work with and your boss is a HUGE deal in my mind.

so if the boss is someone you really like, that is a good sign. but anytime ppl want to go back to a previous employer, i would encourage them to think about the down sides of the company and if any of them are different now.

I would dig into it with the team before I went back. I have some good friends there.
