From Oracle into the woods

I don't think I have ever posted here, but read all the posts. So thought I would run this by the collective mind.

I had a run at Oracle, my first AE role, took it on for around 8 years and sold all over the world. It was a great first place to sell as it is so structured, and so rigid, as well as very "DIY", I learned a ton. I left for a younger company (always the story), she was good but had a crazy owner. I fled that situation and took my current role a bit blind (dumb). The new company has a great product, but an odd org. And I have ZERO pipe, can't figure out who to sell it to, and there have been no new deals booked by anyone for over a year (ouch).

Do I hang on here with a good base, keep learning, and pray for a big deal to turn up? Or jump to a new role with lower base that has a very real chance of hitting OTE?

If you're not getting regular inspections that require justification on your part, take the money, find a new home. There are so many of these platform/products/inventions/widgets that have no market fit.

I sell transparent ML. If you were inclined to ask what that actually is, you wouldn't be alone. Brilliant tech. Patent pending. Not proprietary. Nobody cares.

Some pipe. Some for ETL projects. Some for data labeling. Some for other random self-spun solutions. What I have to do to get a contract in front of anyone who can pay the freight is insane. I also report to a C suite psycho.

So, long way to go... to tell you to go. My opinion from a seat in the same boat.

They call me Daddy, Sales Daddy
I have seen a lot of X-Oracle, X-SAP, X-Cisco, X-Microsoft guys in your same situation. They spend 8 to 10 years at the big company and have a fair amount of success in those organizations only to go to a start up or a much smaller company and not do as well. Donโ€™t take that comment personally, itโ€™s just what Iโ€™ve seen a lot of over the years.

If I were you, I would go back and talk to my friends at Oracle or leverage that Oracle experience and go to SAP or some other large company. I think you would do best in one of those environments, assuming you did well at Oracle.

It is a fair point, and I was with Oracle for years in another role before I sold there, so it has been almost my whole career there. I have a potential lead at Infor, "Oracle-esque," I feel from researching them. It just requires a base shave but with much better potential on the OTE side. I am going to go harder at the Infor oppty I think.

How do you know the next role has a better chance of OTE, but for jumping ship make sure to do your due diligence

True, it would be more accurate to say my current role has no chance at OTE, and if I find the right place I might have a shot at least.

Totally fair point, more of a warning that some companies over exaggerate their quota % during the interview process

Iโ€™d be looking for another role. Youโ€™re not selling, so Iโ€™m not sure what sitting and learning is going to get you. Take your time in your search and be selective in your next role. Best of luck.

You're making a lot of sense! I'm deep diving into the potential next role, and luckily have some old colleagues there, and can get more than recruiters cheerleading

He is hard to get to know, but we get a one hour call a week to ask technical questions about the product ( he created it) and to ask for help positioning it to leads. Otherwise he is extremely busy and always on the road

I would recommend you to stay for an additional 6-12 months more to see if the sales sit would get any better,if yes great,if not then it would be a time to try somewhere else with a close base to the one you currently have as you still do not guarantee if you may still have the same pipe problem at that other company or not!

8 years at Oracle is a GREAT starting point. If you're not happy with the direction your current employer is going, I think you'll easily find something better.

I left Oracle in 10 months because I hated it, I can't offer any advice, but I will acknowledge your ability to tolerate it for so long. Some people like the structure. I don't.

I hear you! I was in a role where I at least liked my direct sales VP a lot. That helped me stick it out under all the paperwork.
