From Software Engineering to Sales

Hey everyone.

I joined Bravado last year because I like sales and was always interested in but the past years I was working as a Software Engineer/Product Developer mostly Freelancing/Contracting in Startups.

Now it's time for me to dig deeper into a different skill and role: Sales

I bring a lot of technical expertise, business and marketing understanding, great advantage to connect with founders, CEO's and tech people but at the same time a beginner mind, to learn, test and adapt. My mindset is like leverage what works and remove or change what doesn't.

So what I'm looking for is a sales environment where I can grow and maximize my sales potential and also the companies revenue. :))

I was thinking about to start with an entry BDR or Sales Engineer position but I'm also open to more unique positions, wherever I can have the biggest impact.

My preference is an environment with high-performing people, which is probably the best way to learn and improve. I can perform well independently but I am also a great team player.

Happy about any feedback, recommendations, mentorship and job offers and in case you just want to talk about sales, drop me a message and we can have a call!

PS: send me a dm for my linkedin or CV

You'll also need to tailor your resume to be sales friendly.

I'd also suggest searching through the boards for interview tips.

There once was a guy who had skills,
An engineer with some dreams, so he spills.
With passion he'd plea,
That sales is for me
But he still couldn't pay the damn bills.

Sales engineer, as mentioned, is your route.

Iโ€™ve never worked at a company where there were enough sales engineers (sometimes called solution engineers). They are invaluable to the sales process. Iโ€™m going to go with the consensus of my esteemed colleagues and agree that itโ€™s your best path.

From your brief explanation of your background, my concern is that you'll fail before you really understand what selling is like. Most technical selling environments carry longer sales cycles. I worry that either you won't have the patience for it, or the company which hires you won't have the patience to teach you Selling 101.

A lot of sales people cut their teeth on door-to-door, phone sales, etc. - high churn environments. That's how they learn basic selling skills. So you'll have to learn that, along with everything else.

Going the SE route can be good, provided you can get the trust of the sales people and have a "sales bent" to you, but till allow the sales person to do their thing.

Good luck!
