Giving My 1st Interview Tomorrow

For context, I'm not a sales leader, but our management team will always have reps interview candidates on more personal level. Mainly to see if they're able to hold a conversation and to see if they'll be a good fit on the team. This will be my 1st time doing something like this, would appreciate any sage wisdom on some good questions to ask!

Like@funcouponssaid, I imagine your hiring manager will handle all of the heavy qualification questions. The way I've conducted peer2peer interviews like this in the past is to have the AE/salesperson conduct a culture and attitude interview. Essentially, you want to make sure that this candidate is someone you would want to work with, collaborate with, and learn from/teach with.

Get to know the candidate, and find a way to build a rapport with them. This type of interview should be fun!

Agreed - this is an opportunity for you to see if you would enjoy working with this person as well! Culture fit is really important

Thanks! I'll treat it like a basic conversation and let the flow of it take over

I'm assuming the hiring manager will have asked the typical heavy hitter interview questions already so I'd position this as just a conversation to get and know them to see if it's someone you'd want to work with.

Some good questions to ask:

- What made you want to apply here?
- What do you like most about working in sales? Least?ย
- What would you be bringing to the team?ย
- What do you like to do outside of work?ย

Those are all really good ones. I like the what would you bring to the team, I'll make sure to incorporate that one. But yeah, it's pretty much conversational, heavy hitters are all done ahead of time.ย

In your case, you are interviewing more as a cultural fit. You need to make sure that you enjoy your conversation because they will be an integral part of your sales team moving forward (hopefully).ย

Last year was the first time I interviewed "future peers" as well in the same situation. Is it 1:1 or can you provide other details on the format of the interview?

Pretty conversational to say the least. Usually it's 1/2 people talking to the candidate. I'm trying to recall the stuff they asked me when I was hired there but my memory is pretty blank.ย

Gotcha, yeah I'd be looking for three things:

1. How well do they think on their feet - "so tell me, what makes you a good sales rep"

2. Are they a good culture fit, can you see yourself getting along with this person

3. Are they someone who enjoys sales or are they someone who fell into sales and is doing it just because. This is a huge difference I've found in someone who is successful vs. someone who is in an existential crisis. They'll be a better team member and performer if they truly love sales - "so tell me, why are you in sales"

Interview them for a culture fit! Whatever you think is important to your company culture and ultimately working together with you - that's what you need to ask!

Have a convo with them as if they were your coworker and keep it professional. They could become your co-worker so it's a great convo to have.ย

That's a fair point. They could end up grabbing the open desk next to me. I'll try to think about that during the process, thank you!!

I think just hearing what concerns they may have or if they came prepared with questions for you is just as important as knowing what to ask them. Organically, if you listen to them & their concerns, your going to naturally have questions to ask. Good Luck!
