Hardest takedown by a prospect?

2 months into my first sales role I got what was the worst response to a cold email I'd received by then and ever since.

The guy quotes Einstein saying that I couldn't put two sentences together. But the real creative put down took a little longer to notice.

He actually went and edited the signature of my email to read: 'Retarded Business Developer'...

Always intrigued to hear the time people put in to telling salespeople to fuck off, looking forward to a discussion here πŸ˜‚

My first sales job was selling pest control door to door during the summer. We were pretty late into the summer meaning that most houses had already been knocked by several companies. I went up to a door, rang the doorbell, and when the door opened I looked up to see the male homeowner ass naked at the door. The only thing I could say was β€œthat’s a great way to get rid of solicitors” and he said β€œI know” and slammed the door. Dazed and confused at what just happened, I turned around and made my walk of defeat off his property.

Man, in today’s day and age to throw around r*tard when it comes with such a sting to it. And to put it in a documented business email, that prospect could easily be fired or get into serious troubleΒ

Not if he works for himself. Still not cool to say that word though.

Yeah I mean even then, my coworkers brothers have Down syndrome and you never know if someone’s family member is impacted by a mental illness.Β

I don't get why people feel the need to belittle others and be mean in general. Like what did that guy gain from doing that, A simple hey thanks for the email but honestly I have no budget and I'm not interested would accomplish the same thing without the spineshivering nastiness.

Actually forgot probably the best part which is that the email came in while I was off for a long weekend.

So the email was forwarded to the rest of the BD team ✌️

Putting aside the use of the term "r*tard", the action of going back and editing your signature is a genius move.Β

Back in the day when I was doing door to door sales for ___ I went to a competitors house(Having no clue) and they paid me in change. Not any silver stuff either. I think in his mind he just wanted me to walk around with 20 lbs of spare change for the rest of the day making my life hell πŸ˜‚

Different level of spite right there - but you've gotta hand it to him haha

How long did it take you to realise that was a competitor?Β

I knew something was funky when I got a bag full of change, he made it clear though by shouting the name of his company while I was on my way out.

6AM call my time. Got 15 minutes into a partnership call as a BDR - and the AE refused to talk and the Engineer overslept (was IN HIS TIME ZONE). I did the whole call almost. 15 minutes in, COO of a startup (talking to CEO and COO), stops me dead in my tracks and says "these are good questions, but I need to take a step back. Why are we here right now?" lol, tough to overcome at 6:15AM 4 months into a role I can tell you that much
