Head-butting with my Manager...

So I am usually the kind of guy when it comes to working with managers and "senior" people, to give the respect that they deserve and am willing to listen to what they have to say.. However, when it comes to having to repeat myself 4-5 times in the same conversation, politely to add, I start getting annoyed when they keep inferring/asking the same question which has been laid out simply for them.

Today was one of those days. in a 1-1 with my director, I started getting annoyed with her when she kept asking the same thing, when I already told her the conversation and answer I had with one of my clients that are up for renewal.... Eventually I just sighed and said, "sure, we can try it that way" when I know for a FACT that it won't because the client themselves told me that it won't work for them..

anyway, end rant.

Just annoyed is all.

Blessed to have a good manager who, to date, has only had valuable conversations with me. We scrapped our weekly check in recently because we were getting way more value out of one-off calls where we talk about specific situations that we're dealing with.

My director must be your directors twin because SAME. Sometimes I feel like my director suggests things that even they know won't work, just for the sake of saying they help make suggestions.
I've even had an instance where I did something with a client that they suggested & it didn't work. I went back & told them what I tried with the client & their response was "Yeah I probably wouldn't have done that". bruh...
I review my director twice a year & always bring it up during that review. I do see some progress in the weeks after but it usually just falls right back to how it was. Good luck to you my friend!!!

I do think a lot of them want to provide some alternate suggestions. Sometimes they're very good, sometimes, eh, maybe not so much so.

The temptation to say "you know I tried that already, right?" could be very strong. I have had luck with "here's what I've done, here's where we are, here's what I'm going to do next..." and let the manager provide suggestions for next steps.

I've worked with enough managers who feel like they have to give input to have my conversations with them be almost reflexive. It's actually "here's what I am thinking about for next steps..." and let them toss a few ideas in. Or a whole roadmap, depending on the manager and the situation. This accomplishes a couple of things - they know what I'm up to and that I'm thinking things through BUT it also lets them add their knowledge and insight. This keeps them advised as to where I am with the added bonus of letting them get a win as a coaching manager. I'm not upwardly mobile, so I'm not challenging my managers for their jobs, so if they happen to get some credit related to closing the deal, it's fine by me. Everybody wins.

Ahhhh... this tells me that your manager has had some "coaching" done to them from the person they answer to. Usually, in these lose-lose scenarios, they'll hit you with this suggestion that you know is not rooted in reality. Here's one of the hardest lessons that took me years to learn. "Sometimes the best thing to do...is nothing at all." Let shit go and focus your time, energy, and enthusiasm on things that you can control. I can't begin to tell you how much stress this has saved me.

Thatโ€™s a tough situation. Pretty sure she wanted you to go a certain way willingly and not kicking and screaming.

Good luck with it!

at the end of the day, I did what she asked... and I was 1103495871203498572304587230492% correct in my original stance.
