Help/Advice

I took a BDR role at a downward spiraling company and they require a desktop hooked up directly to my modem. They're sending the desktop monitor keyboard and headset.
(Also I did not have the hiring manager email until my recruiters last day working for the company even though I've requested it for 2 weeks)
I asked if my router would be fine but they said I can "try" but it probably won't be as sufficient. (my router has wifi 6)
I do not want to set up a desktop in the common area of the living room or have a super long cord going from the living room to the room I will be working in. Also why not just send a laptop. The main concern is I need freedom since I will have to take a unexpected trip out of my country for a immediate family emergency. I'm only starting in about a week so I don't want to tell them I need to be out of the country. Since the job requires to use a desktop I am contemplating whether to just look for another job or bring my whole set up with me everywhere I go. What's my best option?

Communicate. Communicate. Communicate.

Tell them the truth and see is they are humans. If they remain unaccommodating then look elsewhere.

Yep, asking us to guess what they’re going to do or think doesn’t make sense. Definitely talk to them.

This is the first time I've heard of someone sending a desktop.

There is no way you’re gonna drag all that with you. They’ll catch you if you do anyway. You pop in to a company network from Tuscaloosa instead of Tampa - game over. It shouldn’t be a crime though. Also- big brother is watching if they want a hardwired desktop. Just tell them. That is if you want to keep the gig.

You can run Ethernet Over Power when at home.

You plug the Ethernet cable into the router and the wall outlet near the router and then you can put your desktop computer anywhere else in the house which is near (near= cable length) an outlet. I do that for my docking station.

Thanks for the advice everyone. Yea it’s not the toughest situation. Just my concern with seeing a family member who is near the finish line I don’t want to regret. You’re right communication is everything.

People still use desktops for work?

Why did you take a role at a "

downward spiraling company" in the first place? Not judging, just want to understand the reasoning.

I’m new to the industry of tech sales.

The company is more on the retail side but I thought i’d take it since I would add it to my resume for future opportunities. I was just caught by surprise by them sending old desktop equipment to me for a sales role.

I have a roommate who uses the modem and common area for work too. Company is very well established just old. They sell laptops on the “work from home” page on their website if that gives some context. I maybe should have waited for a better opportunity.

I get anxiety traveling with more than a personal item and a carry on.

Please don't travel with an entire desktop set up.

In today's WFH environment, that seems a little archaic. I know many people that work remotely and enjoy the flexibility of working anywhere they please (other countries included). This may come back to bite them. Perhaps they don't want to invest in laptops if they don't have to. I'd ask them for a laptop and state your case.

They won't known you're traveling anyways, unless you'll tell em.
So simply don't, and just try it for a couple of month and see how it works, if it didn't go well as expected, you can always quit.
As I always consider WFH as a really cool thing for having the freedom to work at any part of the planet with your device!
