Help! I peeped confidential information accidentally on purpose and it’s upsetting

I saw what others make and I make far less and it p!sses me off but I can't say anything. ok so here's the basic summary....
I have felt like my boss was a cheap @ss since I was hired. (because I'm younger than him and the other guys, or a female?) My offer letter ended up being less than the minimum salary range on the online posting. I just had my review and I pretty much asked for a $12k raise - to be within his original advertised range, to be in the job market salary range, because he also has added on more responsibilities that typically would be another role, and because inflation, rent, and everything has doubled in price. He came back with $5k less making excuses like he would have to justify that to corporate. However, the other older guy who's been there merely a few months more than I have, who pretty much does the same job except he travels more(paid by company), he's making double what I do now even after raise. We do not get commission so it's not because of that, and it's not job performance because I technically have more duties than him. I know this because the office manager was going to enter in my raise and I was right there and she clicked on the screen that had everyone's salaries and probably didn't think I saw.
He also was skimpy on the office manager, also a woman, and before she just got her 2yr review, she was making less than me when I started. She actually told me this in her free will so that much is different.
I love my job honestly, but happiness doesn't pay the bills. How do I demand the raise I need and deserve, which is technically fair wage for the market, without using me secret arsenal of info and get the lady in trouble? Or is it just not worth it and move on?

So they offered you less than what was advertised? Why would you take that job? You should’ve brought that up before accepting the low ball offer. If anything that shows that you are not aggressive at trying to maximize your value.

I would go to HR (not that they will be of much help) and when they don’t help you I would go to your bosses boss and explain the situation and that you’ve tried to address this through the normal chain and it didn’t help. In the meantime I would look for another job

So that’s the middle stuff I left out. Yes I did, he said that they start out lower and after 3 and 6 mos I would have reviews. Which that’s understandable cuz I’ve been at jobs where you get a raise out of your probation period, so I didn’t look much into it. Thought ok, after my 90 days I’d get the 3k and be in range and work up from there. Well I was wrong. Nothing. But I did get a good review with no complaints.
But the whole time I never knew how much my boss or the other guys made til now. I didn’t know I was so far below. And I have been browsing new jobs but it’s sucks cuz I love what I do and there’s not very many companies at all in this market.

But what would be the biggest “F you” is apply to the competition because I didn’t sign a no compete 👀😈

I see. Unless the offer letter stated you start out at a lower rate then specifies how the pay increases after certain milestones I wouldn’t have accepted the job. Your manager is playing games with your compensation and probably making himself out to look good to his bosses. You need to find a new job and if you can do it with a competitor even better!

Definitely start interviewing with the competition, and anywhere else that looks good. Your boss is going to keep playing games and you're going to continue to be taken advantage of.

BTW, this actually may be illegal, but it's a tough fight to have. Not sure where you live.

You can't go all in unless you're willing to lose it all. If you make demands and they're not met you're options are limited. Best bet IMO is get another offer elsewhere and then demand the salary you want or leave. Gives you the negotiating power.

To channel Sponge Bob: “aight imma head out”. Seriously, that sounds like a terrible boss and I don’t think he’ll ever change. Sounds misogynistic too.

Sorry to burst your bubble but there is no way you’ll get the salary you deserve in your current organisation.

From what you’re reporting, there is a rampant inequality (if not sexism) and lack of transparency that’s part of the company’s culture. Your boss will not see it as a problem, but as a négociation game, which you lost because :
- you caved in first when you accepted the job with a salary below the advertised amount
- caved in again when you requested a fair raise but agreed to half of it.

Basically, he is not going to take tou seriously as the past has shown you’re valuing other stuff (the company, the work you have, the people you work with etc…) more than the salary itself.

Best thing you can do is go apply for other positions with a much better pay, and when you get an offer, go back to your boss requesting not that he matches it, but pay you 10% better than the offer. As that point, it’s about showing that he truly values you, not just paying you the market price.

If he doesn’t (which I’m sure he won’t) just accept the other offer and leave

A manager/boss like that won't change, and even if you get what you want they will hold it against you.
Unfortunately in this case, in order to be compensated fairly, you're going to need to go elsewhere.

I'd also look for another job if I were you. The increases you could get there would be so small in relation to a jump from a new company. Take your experience somewhere where they pay your worth.
Even if you love the workplace, there are a ton of great places to work.

To the extent it’s helpful, I spent 2 years in a similar scenario scheming ways to get paid fairly and stay in the org until, one day, the company did some funny math to withhold my commissions. I spent 4 months interviewing (taking my time) and ended with 3 offers all of which gave me a $50-$60K raise, because that is what fair market value is… if you demand it. One caveat, based on your decision to agree and start below the posted range, every company will lowball you if you let them. I had an offer after 1 month of interviewing for $30K below the one I ultimately accepted. When I countered, they wouldn’t move. I walked… I think you need to be willing to behave similarly. Don’t budge if people won’t pay what you’re worth. Especially in sales.

I hate to say it, but you might need an offer for them to match in order to get more. Or next review you really need to ask for a lot, since it seems the manager will just try to meet you in the middle based on your example

Agreed with all the other advice, but also I highly recommend that you read the book "Machiavelli for Women." It was exactly written for the scenario and experience you are having and will help you as you work your way out of it.

get. out. of. there.

that is crazy. you can demand a raise by going and getting an offer from other company. and then if they dont match it, leave.

sounds like a place I would no longer be working at. Find a new gig and make sure you leave reviews on Glassdoor, repvue, etc with what you've learned to warn other people who may be interested in the company in the future.

Document things he does differently with you vs male counterparts (in writing via email, slack, etc) and make a complaint with HR. They won't do anything but at least it will be formal then.

Go over his head to his boss, then go over that guy's head if you get the run around there.

If all else fails, its illegal for companies to pay women less than then men (assuming you're in the US). So you always have the option to lawyer up. Plenty of lawyers will gladly take cases that they get paid out on a percentage from the winnings of the suit instead of hourly/flat rate/whatever. Obviously you can't plan to still work there after that though. But again, you will need a ton of documented evidence here to have an actual case.

Soooo ready for the kicker? We don’t really have HR. Our HR is also the office manager WHO I PEEPED FROM! 😂😂😂😂🤦🏼‍♀️
And our corporate, is headquarters in Finland. So there really isn’t much help for me from others. And my boss is even cheap with spending money on exhibiting in shows, ordering marketing materials and buying supplies for the office. It’s not even personally his money, it’s the company budgeting. But he still makes a fat $150k.
The rich aren’t rich from being careless and generous.

that's wild, good luck with that one then. I would still file the complaint with them so there's something documented.

I've had bosses like that before. for some reason, their whole goal is to save the company as much money as possible, even though it isn't their job and most companies have entire teams of people who's job is to determine each departments budget for various things and what is safe for them to spend.

150k salary definitely isn't rich lol. that's barely comfortable in this economy. but I do get your point.

Sounds like a shit deal. Look for a better one. Also very interested how someone in your position is making double your salary, there has to be a contributing factor right?

Technically not the same same, but we do the same functions. Both are sales, handle vendors and help push through business…. But I make and send quotes, do other office/administrative stuff (as he lives in SC), but he travels to all exhibitions whereas I don’t travel as much. But any travel expenses all the way down to food is paid by the company. So those are really the only differences.
