Well continuing on my previous post let's drill down here on two points:

What is the definition of a toxic environment?

A 'toxic' environment can mean so many different things. Some of the toxic environments that I've seen:
- Junior employees are treated like assistants vs. doing their actual job
- One group of people are given preferential treatment (men, white people, straight people, pretty people, etc.)
- Lack of accountability in the interview process that creates an echo chamber

I could go on, but it can sometimes be VERY easy to identify toxic cultures, and sometimes it can be incredibly difficult to identify.

Toxic for me is lack of accountability and transparency at the leadership level. From the CEO to the team lead, everyone should understand the why behind the decisions the company is making.  I'm not talking fake "Friday meeting" transparency, I'm talking actual real talk transparency.  Make sure your leadership team is pushing to build a business, not throwing unicorn pickles against the wall and hope they stick.

Didn't see previous post- I worked at a place that encouraged spying on co-workers and where the CEO yelled regularly. My thing is if people yell at employees, just leave.

That's the other post link. Why was there spying??? that is very very weird. YELLING is beyond toxic I was more looking for passive aggressive manipulation type.

Oh, it was like a fucking cult. If people weren't "working hard" enough, they'd get snitched on. I didn't have a manager for a while and my team continued to have deal meetings to help each other. People reported to management we were having "secret meetings." I started looking for a new job by month 3.

There are so many ways to define a "toxic" environment, and I think the WFH pandemic culture has highlighted toxic leadership traits that weren't as harmful in an office setting.

If you can't trust your people, fire and rehire. The lack of trust I've seen from some managers during this pandemic has been astonishing and has resulted in more time-wasting meetings, more keeping the laptop open all hours of the day to respond, and more anxiety as people struggle to represent themselves.

If I were assessing a new work environment, I'd ask a lot of questions about how their leadership team navigated this pandemic; it might give you a good feel for the overall trust and autonomy given to their people!

that is a good point to ask how they maneuvered the pandemic

I think it generally means that you’ll likely be expected to work outside of the duties of your specific role and wear many hats.
