How important is location? Canadians pls

SDR in Toronto here - good job with a Fortune 1000 making 100k CAD rn.

Been thinking of moving to Calgary for the lower cost of living and being able to have a fully paid off condo before I'm 30.

But I don't want to do that if it limits my career opps. In a remote environment does it really matter where I live? And does moving outside our real commercial city mean I'll have a mediocre career?

I want to stay in enterprise/ strategic sales at Public companies preferable in cyber security.

What is the vibe on remote work in Canada? I have family in Montreal and they have stayed remote while friends in Hamilton had to go back to the office. If you more to Calgary (Flames, yuck), would you keep your job?

Why don’t you think of making more money from where you’re now instead? It’s your choice but just a thought

Yeah lol thats what I’m working toward but 40% of my income goes to taxes, 14% sales tax on purchases and then housing prices are about 7x that in Calgary so it would take much longer to save that amount. In Calgary 5% sales tax and only 29% of my income would go to taxes.

From that perspective it might make sense if you share able to make the same $
I agree with the income tax 😂

Can you keep your current job and go remote?

Yeah, I am remote. I’m just concerned about future roles given the layoffs and the fact that I might want to move companies in 2 or 3 years,

Well, I'm not Canadian, but I went fully remote from a company that had a big office in a nearby city over a decade ago. Where I actually live is definitely suburbia and any local jobs for big companies are not in my industry, plus a couple respectable big name companies merged with other companies and then abandoned their offices, so I'm pretty hosed if it comes to looking locally.
That said, since I'm in sales and have been remote for years, I found a new job working for a company based halfway across the country. Once established as a remote sales exec, maybe you wouldn't have as much issue getting that next job; you're already remote now.
Then again, I think of what might happen if I moved somewhere like Montana in the middle of nowhere, a fair distance from a city or airport, and how cumbersome travel for work would become. That's one consideration. Living in or near Calgary would be different than out in the hinterlands of Alberta. But if it's calling your name and your company will let you do it, you can worry about 2-3 years from now when that happens. You'll also have 2-3 years more of experience and proof that you can make it work from where ever you end up by that point, too.

I think remote work is being pulled back right now, however, remote is also here to stay so I don't think it is that limiting.

You shouldn’t have a hard time doing the same job or finding a new remote one but why in the hell would you move to Calgary lmao.
Yeah 100k isn’t what it used to be but you can live and save on that even in TO
