how mad should i be?

finance director got mad at me for asking after a delayed commission from mid Q2 (we are paid EOM of first invoicing, which was june in this case) and i was told to apologize. she neglected to tell me that the invoice was sent out late and i learned this from my manager today who said it clearly assuming that i knew.

dollar amount in question is about 20k pre tax.

how mad should i be?

You work to get paid, when pay doesn’t show, you get to ask questions.

10/10 mad! I used to work for a company that regularly messed up like this. Your job is to sell, not manage invoices so the company needs to get it together, you shouldn’t be penalized.

Is this how large most of your deals are? Just wondering what your normal process is to know when finance gets payment.
If I had 20k waiting for me I would be checking twice a week lol

startup land. system changes and lack of visibility in some infrastructure. i'm not gonna complain about a month or two to payment so long as it happens in quarter (we're about an $80k ASP here) just so long as you don't leave me in the dark about what / why. visibility is all i want.

yeah funnily enough the comp showed up in my account this morning without so much as a whisper. starting fires does get things done, that much is certain.

Making sure I understand this correctly: you were told to apologize for asking a question? A normal question that anyone would ask when they aren’t paid on time

Fuck them…. Have them go hire a sales rep who does not care about getting paid and let them see how that works out for the company.

why is this a hard concept…. Sales people love money if they didn’t they would be in marketing.

Well, I’d rather ask at what and/or whom should you be mad at? I mean it looks like someone forgot to tell you, or is there a mechanism through which you are expected to know that didn’t work? Also, did you ask or rather demand?

Yeah that's what I'm wondering. What system are they using now to know what happens when?

agree completely here / could have added more context. we use quota path which is a great tool but i don't think we've fully figured out how to use it here. only visibility i had was "earned" which showed the dollar amount but "approved" was on $0 as they hadn't paid the invoice deposit yet (i signed the comp plan no complaints on that is what it is).

the issue was i had no visibility into why it was approved and when slacking the finance director the best answer i got over 4 interactions over the course of july was "they haven't answered my email" ... come to find out the invoice was sent out late, found that out from my manager who clearly thought that i knew.

so yeah was just asking for visibility basically was my complaint, i can wait for $ just tell me why!!

Thanks for that, it helps. I think overall you just followed the rules and when something looked different, you asked what's wrong here. I can't see anything bad there, just a finance director over reacting. The explanation was very clear and if they had just told you that after the 1st email you sent, everyone would be less frustrated!

What?! It's your money, you have a right to understand when it'll be paid out. Your finance director needs to quit displacing her BS on you. Obviously that's some projecting-type-bullshit.

I had this happen recently, not exactly the same but basically someone didn't do their end in finance and then i had to wait 2 months for the $$... I think you have every right to question.  I also in those moments want to look at the finance dip who screws up and say your turn to get paid commission and I will take your salary, let's see how you like my lack of action on your part.

Honestly, it depends how you approached her or how she inferred your email if sent. It’s easy to say in hindsight or in wr that you kindly asked for your check like an orphan asks for more soup but if she thought you were being a dick about it, you probably were.
