How much weight do you put on Glassdoor/RepVue, etc. salaries when looking for a job?

I see these sites getting references frequently on posts here, so I'm curious as to how much they are being considered when applying/interviewing. Do you find that what's posted on these sites is pretty aligned with what offers you're getting?

For comp I trust them to a degree, but just make sure to use multiple data sources. Repvue, compgauge, and glassdoor.

The reviews are tough to go off of

^ yup. Exactly what I did. Take it all with a grain of salt and ask at every stage of the interview regarding comp.

The other huge thing is reaching out to past people or current people at the company about their experience in the team you’re looking for.

What’s the best way to frame comp questions? How do you appropriately bring it up

Typically goes 1 of 2 ways: the recruiter asks first or they don’t. If the latter then you need to initiate.

If they ask first - they’ll typically say what are you looking for. Don’t answer, respond with a question - “appreciate you asking. Would you be comfortable to share what the typical base and OTE is for this position?” So far, have never had a recruiter not answer this. Don’t give out a number first, ask this question and let them give out the first number(s) mentioned.

If they DON’T ask you that, then you need to initiate. A few minutes into the call after they’ve gotten through their first questions I say “out of respect for both your time and mine, would you be willing to share the typical base and OTE for this position?”

In both scenarios, hearing a number first let’s you put your desired pay at the top of that range.

Google the role plus your area and you will see what the average is to compare.

I think the compensations are fairly in line. Depending on the situation it can be different obviously. I do weigh the reviews of the companies pretty heavily. You want to see trends, hopefully in the right direction.

Its a starting point to find companies and a resource to use for negotiations to see what can be possible.

Even if they have a perfect repvue, I will still be asking about team % of quota and what % of reps hit quota

They're rough guidelines, good to get an idea but I don't know exactly how accurate they are. Especially when it comes to companies like SFDC that seem to have a million different positions.

comp-lots of value. reviews-glassdoor is just the mad people so not alot of value there. repvue is gold-spend a bunch of time there

Good to know! I’m actually most interested in understanding base salaries to help filter out conversations on roles that won’t come close to my current base. Have relied on Glassdoor, so will spend more time on RepVue

Not a lot. I'd also want to talk to ex-employees / current employees before making my mind up. These are usually anonymous, so people just rant out (SOMETIMES*).

A lot of time, I am looking for comp. I have found that Glassdoor usually only gets bad reviews from employees who are pissed they got fired and it isn't a great representation of what actually goes on in the company.

I think the comp are in line with what the companies offer. So it is a great starting point, but we are in sales and everything is up for negotiation.

You could also just move to a state that requires they list their salaries

People post because they are mostly disgruntled. So I take their comments on the company with a grain of salt.

That said, I have seen salaries, benefits, & interviews mostly on target.

You’re going to see some rants on Glassdoor, that naturally happens when employees get fired and want to be heard.

However, when there’s a fair amount of negative detailed reviews that are similar enough and the positive ones don’t provide much insight/are 1-3 sentences, that’s a red flag IMO

I read the company's terms and conditions; research their product reviews, and what their customers might be talking about them on social media, Reddit.

How many reps are hitting quota, what's their leadership like? What are the interview process reviews?

Compensation is the last thing.
