How to approach gig jobs

I'm thinking of taking on some contract sales jobs for a little extra cash on the side, and this is the first time I've ever really considered it. Thinking about my resume, I think it would be cleaner if I could have a single entry that covers all the jobs I (hopefully) get so I'm thinking of starting an LLC for that reason among a few more.

Has anyone else done that and is it worth it/have the companies been ok with paying to your LLC? Or, if you've done contract/straight commission jobs on the side, how do you approach it in terms of resume, taxes, etc.

Thanks in advance and happy selling!

You should have an LLC in my opinion. It's the gateway to write offs. The LLC won't deter contract work. You can attach the side company to a payroll service and pay yourself on a schedule or whenever you feel like having an extra soda pop. I've heard incfile com is a good route for the basic entity + tax ID.

Here's the fun part: You can then build a business credit profile. Start with Grainger, then add Quill. Neither require a personal guarantee. Spend $50 min. on something and pay it net 30. You can find the rest of the path online for the fastest route to an auto lease in your EIN.

The resume entry is sort of the tricky part. You can call yourself an employee from 1883 - current, but it's likely to raise a question when applying for a full time job. So maybe you remove it there. Use it where you think you need it.

Good luck!

Thanks for the advice! Hadn't thought about the questions a "current" entry may bring up on a resume. But that's exactly what I was thinking of doing when setting up the LLC. Much appreciated!

No legit employer should care if they are paying you or an LLC for contract work.

But I'd just be careful about serving 2 masters. Very hard to divide your time equitably.
