I like to have the autonomy to make my own decisions and run my business (territory) the way I want, abiding by company policies. I also have a specific day and time to meet one on one weekly to give the run down and receive feedback. I also figure things out on my own so if I go to my manager they know I've exhausted every avenue possible and need help. Trust, support, and guidance.

This is the exact same set up that i currently have.  Its sometimes hard to know you will get this before you start working however if you are are a good judge of character it can help.

Are you hiring a manager...as an AE?

I'm seeking feedback on how others evaluate managers so I can better determine who I want to work for.

Ah, well that makes more sense!

What do you value from managers you've had in the past?

For me, I need to retain autonomy in my work and I require direct and prompt feedback on my work as it happens(radical candor). If a manger seems like they like to micro and/or are caddy/withholding of feedback, then I won't want to work for them/that company.

If you have the luxury of choice, I'd connect with other AEs who report to the managers and get their feedback.  Outside of style, I would look for someone whose team makes their numbers consistently; where the turnover is not high with AEs jumping ship for greener pastures; and who will work with you to get deals across the line and cut through any internal bs that stands in the way of a good deal.

Easygoing/approachable personality, knowledgeable with proven hands on experience in an AE role, not a micromanager, invested in my success (available for questions, not afraid to get their hands dirty,) cares about results and not worthless metrics and rubber stamps, sense of humor is a plus.

If I can't grow under your leadership I need a new manager.

I look at a Manager who is friendly, open to listening things, doesn't intend to micromanage and make me bond with cross functional teams. Wants to know from me how and what he can improve in him.

Little broad of a question but I like to see a manager with closing experience, came up through the ranks so they understand what I am trying to do in career advancement and someone who is a teacher at heart to help the team
