How to stay motivated during layoff season?

For anyone that senses a real possibility of layoffs at their company, any tips for letting that not distract you?

I keep telling myself that the best way to not get laid off is to keep working hard and crushing it but that only gives me so much energy.

Since you mention that you're personally not concerned about being laid off:

As the old saying goes, "don't borrow trouble". It means: don't worry about what hasn't yet come to pass. Best thing to do is take care of what you can control, and deal with any fallout when it actually happens.

Really grateful for the support here. Although it may seem like basic advice, your comment really helped me ground some reality here and care less about things I can’t control.

You're welcome. It's something I have to do for myself, too. All the time.

That doesn't mean you don't have plans for all potential outcomes, but for me it especially means don't fret. Perseverating over possible negative outcomes just leads to ulcers. :)

I'm being laid off on Tuesday, it's happening. The best answer I can possibly give to you is that I was told this news and have 5 opportunities with a final interview next wednesday for 1 of them. Tech sales roles are still in demand and at most it would take you a month to find something new if laid off.

On the one hand, I'm sorry to hear it. On the other, congratulations on being one step ahead.

You got the answer, that’s what I would do. Only one additional thing I would do is not attract those thoughts of getting laid off.

Are you specifically on the chopping block? Start building up your savings and or start looking for new jobs. Easier to find a job when you have one

I have zero concerns about myself relative to peers. My annual review was solid and my numbers speak for themself.

For me the concern is just layoffs in generally that might disproportionately impact sales and marketing.

I’d imagine there might be a few in a similar situation.

Have you tried talking directly to your manager about it all? Ask for honest situations where you would/wouldn't be laid off. I find clarity takes away a lot of worry. Once you have that, it may not distract you as much.

I did and they told me they don’t know of anything for sure yet (which I believe). They assured me THEY want to keep investing in me as a manager, but can’t guarantee anything.

“But did you die?!?!”

On a serious note, try and unplug yourself a bit if you feel like you’re otherwise doing well. Worrying about the situation isn’t going to help anyone, least of all yourself. Try a hobby to distract yourself outside of work, then focus on the grind during the week. You got this!

Block out the noise and network. During times like this be motivated to meet others. Control what you can control

Work/worry about the things you can control, not the things you can't. Work on your resume, finalizing commission, your next steps etc and not what you can't.

I've been working on my resume this past week and networking, since thats all I can control outside my influence in a deal cycle.
