I got a job offer! ๐Ÿฅน

Buenos Dรญas Savages!ย

So I've been on the job hunt for a few months, I was trying to get in SaaS sales for the money and wanting to work remote, but this other opportunity popped up out of the blue and I'm going to run with it!ย

My brother in law introduced me to a good friend of his who started a freight brokerage 2 years ago and are looking to grow. After talking with him for about 45 min he offered me the gig of freight agent, I'll be their first hire, specializing in moving big, nasty, complicated and very expensive shipments. Its an interesting role I never would have thought of as sales, but I'll need to prospect, sell them on the service and, manage their account so it's right in my wheelhouse. The role is commission only, which I'm a little nervous about but, I'll be able to train and start while I keep my current job until I get my legs under me and money coming in.ย

I was just using this announce my news, but what are everyone's thoughts on getting a job by huntin & applying vs. networking? ย Personally, the best jobs I've ever had came through networking.ย

Every job Iโ€™ve had has come by way of a referral by a current employee. Iโ€™ve never been called after applying through a company website.

Yep I was recruited to my past 3 jobs by the hiring team. But when I applied for jobs, I did find it the most helpful to contact a current employee.

A lot of companies have referral bonuses so it helps both of us if I get hired!

Congrats my friend. Iโ€™ve found that 2 and 3 have gotten me the most satisfying jobs. However, I love hearing success stories of throwing out an application and landing at a dream company - it goes to show you should never stop trying. Happy for you!

Thanks ๐Ÿ™‚ my current job is 7:30-3:30, my new one has no set hours, so Iโ€™ll be afternoons/evenings & weekends and using my manager for anything urgent that comes up if I canโ€™t get to it and splitting the commission with him if itโ€™s taking too much of his time. My goal is 1 month training, then 3 months working like this until I can give notice

Networking has gotten me into open roles and enabled new roles to be created for me. Always expand that network!

i mean what ever works for you works! i have ZERO success with just applying to job postings.

I have always leveraged SOMEONE to help me get a job or find a job.

I hope the commission only gig works for you. i did that for 5 years and it scared me for LYFE brah.

Haha, the commission only thing will be new for me ๐Ÿคž๐Ÿผ. I passed on a commission only offer awhile ago because I just didnโ€™t get a good feeling about the guy Interviewing me and the company. My brother in law (who is one of the most honest good hearted people you could ever meet) knows my new boss very well and said he is 1 of 5 people outside of family that he truly trusts. That made all the difference to me in accepting the job.

Networking has landed my best jobs, but I was recruited into them by previous contacts - so my network did the work for me.

However, I wouldn't rely on that alone. If I was looking, I'd be working my network and applying to suitable jobs.

I got my first great job through a cold application. From there built the network I've relied on for every job since.

You know, I realize that is true for me as well.

I literally responded to a newspaper classified (remember those?). I'd put the paper in the recycle bin after reading the jobs section, and then thought, "wait a minute" and applied. Went down to Kinko's (remember them?) to fax the application in, got a phone call the next day to come in for an interview.

It ended up being for a tech company; the rest is networking from that single job.

Congrats! Sounds like it'll be a grind, but I believe in you.

I've gotten most of my roles from being head hunted. First gig out of college was through a buddy of mine. Only had two jobs that I was the applicant for.

Congrats!

Even when applying cold, I always found a way to connect with someone internally.

You may be surprised how willing people are to grab a referral bonus if they trust youโ€™re a good hire. Itโ€™s a win-win. Access, Insight, Reward.

Now that you have a gig, the above will be far less stressful should you decide to look around.
