I've been an Enterprise BDR going in 1 year, I want to be an AE

I've been a BDR for 11 months now, my current company and I discussed the next step for me- I told them I want to be an AE

Should put myself out there for an AE role or wait and see what happens at my current company

what does the market look like for me with no AE experience but have taken AE responsibility at my current company

What did they say when you told them you wanted to be an AE?
Can you also explain "

what does the market look like for me with no AE experience but have taken AE responsibility at my current company"

The market for an AE with 0 experience is pretty tough at the moment. I'm in a similar spot to you.
Please add more context and im sure the senior sales savages in here will be able to help

It'll be an uphill battle without a doubt. But it's worth spending some of your off hours exploring what's out there.

my manager told me to talk to Current AEs(which I did) and ask them how they get there that was it, he asked me again before leaving but it is something I have to discuss with my current manager who was just promoted from BDR to senior BDR/manager

Do both. Talk internally to those who can promote you and apply to AE job externally as well. It could be a VERY good learning experience for you.

Define AE responsibility, is that being on the discovery. Have you been a part of demos and closing?

being in demos, discovery, and creating opportunities and following up with them(if requested by RVPS

AE primary role is to close business - and those are tasks. Focus on the parts of what you've done that are related to closing.

It can't hurt to try to poke your head around to see if you can get an AE job outside of your current org. Just, obviously be aware that it's a tough market to do this in. Also be aware that you're probably not going Enterprise AE right away (unless it's a startup), you'll probably start in the SMB space first. In the meantime, keep crushing it in your BDR role.

To pursue AE roles, you’re going to have to be able to describe what you bring to the role. If you have some kind of experience, you’re going to need to be able to describe that experience in a positive manner.

Take all the routes that can give you what you want. Externally - there might be some companies who might give you smb role but the market is crazy bad. What type of convo you had internally? Any clarity on timeline, how many are contenders? It’s competition everywhere.

No timeline as of yet, the conversation was to discuss with current AEs on how they were promoted. I do join discoveries and demos, I also create opps and follow with the lead if requested by our RVPS

I had the same question at the begging of the year; I left a company I was at for 10 months of being an SDR and wasn't given the chance to take meetings, left for an AE role in a very shitty company; totally regretted it. Now I am back to applying at SDR roles in order to try tog et that chance again. Try to become an AE where you are at now! Give it a bit more time if necessary, remember; average SDR to AE promotion is about 2 years. You have a lot more going if you stay where you are to become an AE :) good luck E.T!!

There's no harm exploring both the routes - you can see what the current company has to offer; but why limit? You'd want to know the industry standards as well - so better look out and see what the market has to offer too.

Then decide.

I’m on my 3rd BDR role due to layoffs and have entered the cycle to interview for AE twice during that period - it’s extremely difficult to become an AE at another company with no experience.

Stick it out at your current job to become AE and then go wherever with that title bump.
