Incoming new manager: Best and worst

Couldn't find a topic on this but would love feedback from both Managers and the IC's of the WR.

When joining a new company in a management seat, what has allowed people to incorporate well into the team and what have people done to make immediate enemies?

Early in my career my company (which had a revolving door of sales management.. big red flag folks), the new VP of Sales had us all cram into the conference room, and played the scene from Glengarry Glennross. To set the tone.

This was an inside sales term full of middle aged women and a couple of old salts, and me the young buck. We sold industrial manufacturing. Shit that you'd never be able to hard close.

It scared the shit out of everyone in there and he clearly didn't understand the product.

He lasted a YEAR lol it was awful. In the end he went back to jewelry sales. No idea wtf ownership was thinking.

Oh wait yeah I do: we have burned the bridges for every major OEM in our space due to shitty performance. It must be because the inside salespeople aren't dialing the phones enough ๐Ÿ™„

ouch, yeah nothing worse than someone who comes in with preconceived notions and doesn't take time to figure out how the team operates before injecting their own shit.

Take bits and pieces of what is working well on every other team in your area and implement it. Don't try to reinvent the wheel on things that are already working really well, you don't have to make your life more difficult. Also don't be afraid to drop something that isn't working, be open to failingย  and then course correct from there.ย

What does growth look like to you? Will I be a manager with a bag? What kind of technology are you willing to invest in? What kind of analysis have you done on your ICP? What is my relationship to marketing? Do I have access to the product team to give early customer feedback.
