Interview frustration !!!

I have interviewed with 3 jobs over the past month or two and made it to the final stages in all three. In after the process is over they end up eventually going with another candidate.

Each time they tell me they found someone with that direct experience. Its so annoying because why would you interview me to begin with and waste my time instead of interviewing candidates with the experience your looking for.

The interview process is so draining and I'm tired atp!

Does anyone else deal with this or what do you do in this situation?

Next time ask if they are also considering internal candidates. If so then follow up with what advantages do they think external candidates will bring? See if they struggle to answer that.

Great question, because we’ve been seeing a version of these interview results pretty frequently.

This is always extremely frustrating. Good luck with future ones.

One question that you can ask is "what concerns do you have about me as a candidate?" More than likely the direct experience concern will come up and you will be able to knock the objection out

I always do this as well most of the time they don’t have anything to say and when they do I always address their concerns.

If you aren't already doing this, close them there.

"Based on our discussion(s) and your lack of concern(s), it seems that you would be moving forward with me/next steps. Would that be fair to say or is my understanding a tad off?"

Try to be candid with the recruiters from the start. Recruiters make excuses to try and feel better about turning people away, but if you get them talking they'll likely tell you how it is. Similar to deals you work, you want to get to a no quickly

This is frustrating. I have interviewed in a company through referral recently. My friend who referred me told the next day of HR outreaching me that the position is filled, still the HR took my interview. When I asked the same question, the HR mentioned that they are looking to increase the headcount but never hired anyone. Not sure if this is the case with you where they already hired someone.

Yes I am, it seems like they are interested also but then always end up not choosing me. I don’t know what else to do. The most recent interview I had it was just casual chat we didn’t even talk about my experience in full depth tbh , and I was asking all the questions.

It’s common to have diversity in candidates & experience to have a measuring stick. They often know what they think they want but want to be sure so a variety are interviewed. That said, it is possible to get the job, you have to accentuate the different things you’d bring that would strengthen the team. Everyone the same isn’t good, just comfortable.

I was told by a friend that owns a recruiting agency that sometimes companies publish job postings, and even interview candidates even when the job does not exist or is already going to an internal candidate. This because they have to prove they were fair in their search, especially if they have contracts with government agencies. I think you will have a feeling when you are interviewing when something is off...vague or neutral answers, etc. Silver lining? You are polishing your interview skills for when the right opportunity comes along. All the best for you.
