Is it true if you don’t use it, you lose it? (PTO Edition)

Thinking about leaving my company. I’ve accrued and maxed out my PTO hours. Do companies have to payout your accrued and unused PTO hours?

If not, is it a bad look to take a 3 week vaca then quit?

Take long vacation before quitting?

Depends how burnt out you are.

My old company asked me to work my notice period which I did at 25% efficacy.

Then they paid me out 2 weeks of holiday, which was the best bonus I got while there.

It’s state dependent. You can Google this to know for sure.

They don't have to pay you. Which is why you take it.

Depending on where you live, they may be legally obligated to pay you. If there’s no law, there’s probably no reason they will pay you so take that PTO. Keep in mind you might burn bridges if you take 3 weeks off and quit buts that’s up to you. At least take some time off and then take a week off between jobs so you can fully refresh.

I got all my untaken PTO/sick days paid out when I left.  However, this may be different if you have the "unlimited PTO" model and there's no slotted time for vacation.

Mine pays them out. I'm probably going to just leave and get paid out because they'd never approve a 3 week vacation.

I changed jobs last year. Former company was a huge corp and they paid out all unused PTO. Try to look up their policy.

If it is PTO legally they have to pay that out when you leave and its a nice check. If it is unlimited time off which all companies should be on to alleviate the above then youre fucked. But PTO=Check paid last day of service

Do you not get allotted, legal, holiday pay in America? If I quit tomorrow in the UK I'd get my full month salary + my accrued & reminder holiday pay on top?

Lol, it can depend on the state and company. For me being in Florida, many laws are written in our state to protect the company.
It's a right to work state where I can be fired for any reason at any time with no warning or final work period.
Florida is one of the strictest on Non-competes, which in states like California are illegal (If I remember).
But at least I'm near the beach so I have that going for me..

That sounds mad man, good luck on the ventures. As you said, if all else fails you have the beach which sounds Idyllic! Could your boss come in in a bad mood and just fire you and that’s it?

In my hiring letter it says they don't pay out PTO and they don't let it accrue. My only option is use it or lose it.

Depends.  Do you value your personal brand?  I wouldn't do this but everyone is different.

Do you still wear a full suit to your 1st meeting with a prospect, or is that completely dust now and feel like a used car salesman?
