Is this cold call opener deceitful?

Maybe I'm tripping, but saying "how've you been?" DOES NOT seem unethical to me in the slightest.

What do y'all think?

It’s not unethical, but it is weird and too thought out IMO

I always start cold calls with a very simple process in mind;

- Always be sharp, upbeat, clear in what I’m saying

- Hi John my name is ‘X’ calling from ‘X’

- I won’t keep you for long at all as you Weren’t expecting my call, do you have a minute to speak? …. 95% of people say yes, as long as you are saying it with the right tones and pace

- great… reason for the call is blah, do you have your diary to hand so we can book you in to go through x y and z?

- Leave them with a dangling carrot and confirm everything in writing

- remind them the day before and confirm

- remind then an hour before

I don’t even think you wanted to read this but I have nothing better to do rn so sorry in advance 😹

I don't like to ask questions that could me an easy no like that or give them an easy out. Them answering the phone signals to me that they have time.

This doesn’t address any sort of problems they might have and start a dialogue on how they’re currently handling them.

What reason would they ever have to show up?

Also permission based openers I just don’t agree with.

They can always hang up no need to advertise it. Pausing or adding any more time in seconds to them understanding what the call is about delays moving right into the conversation.

“Hey this is Salesperson from X, I know you weren’t expecting my call but from your peers I’ve spoken with, everyone seems to have different ways of dealing with X/Y problem, how are you going about it?”

If that works for you, science shows that the first 4 seconds and the next 30 seconds is 80% about the tone and pace you speak, less about the content, if you use he right tone and pace, and get the initial buy in, then you have a better chance at getting into the meat of the call in a more positive way 🙂

Permission based opener all the way. I like most of Belal's content. He uses a "mic drop" question right after they say "yes."

Fair. But it’s just the virtue signaling that’s annoying. It ain’t that serious, Belal.

Agreed it's a very minor thing. In this case I give Belal benefit of the doubt b/c I typically like his content.

He probably has a LI post quota he has to meet and this was the only thing he could come up with ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Hot Take, the opener rarely matters, it's the close of the call and next steps that do. after that prospect hangs up they have already forgotten your name and the way you opened the call 95% of the time

They call me Daddy, Sales Daddy
It’s lame and pathetic.
Someone calls me and says that I’m immediately put on the defensive and the likelihood of that conversation continuing longer than 10sec is about 1%.

It's not unethical, but I used it for a while and honestly it pisses people off.

My go-to, always has been, always will be, the absolute money maker, is

"Hey xxxx, it's xxxx over at xxxx.  You might hate me because this is a cold call.  Did you want to hang up or can I steal you for a minute?"

Hint - you have to nail the delivery

Pretty sure the "how you've been?" opener came from some Gong analysis saying they've analyzed millions of cold calls and figured out "how you've been" is the magic sauce to getting more demos booked

I don't see how it's a good cold calling opener from any angle. Most of the time, I like what Belal posts, but this post clearly isn't one of them.

First impressions matter when cold calling. There's no personalization, the copy doesn't establish relevance between the person sending the email and the one receiving it, and it doesn't answer the "what's it in for me?" question for the prospects.

Most people can see through a made-up cold call script. I'd much rather prefer preparing a set of openers that have worked for you in the past and recycle them on a case to case basis.
