Just got hired with a new firm but haven't started yet. LinkedIn advice.

Hello savages!

How long do you wait to announce a new role on LinkedIn? I've typically waited until the actual start date. I've done a little research on this topic and others have suggested waiting a few weeks into your new role.

What has been your experience with this? While I'm eager to broadcast my new role, I also want to be smart about it.

Thoughts?

Wait until you start. Hell, wait until you are a week or 2 in.

Typically, I wait two full weeks. Usually by then, you'll be able to gauge whether or not you've been completely duped.

Just playing out some potential scenarios in my head. Posting before I start might be a bad idea should someone reach out for some help (unlikely but could happen). Posting on the start date might cause the same situation. I wouldn’t be ready for a meeting. Waiting until I’m settled seems like the safe choice. Then again, getting the word out earlier could build some momentum. I was just curious how others deal with this and why.

I am! This is what I do. I think about and analyze things all the time. I even researched what day employers typically provide a job offer. It’s Thursday. When did I receive my offer? On a Thursday. 😂 shall I go on? I also research things like.. what is the best color to wear on an interview. Which colors I shouldn’t. This is my inner nerd coming out. 🤓

Don’t over think it. wait until you feel settled and ready to announce. If that’s 2 weeks , great, 2 days , great, 2 months, whatever.

Do you boo boo.

Why does making it public on social media matter?

Branding myself as I prepare to prospect. I use LinkedIn as part of my sales process.

Do you believe that makes an impact and builds any sort of credibility, going from one job to the next, branding one product v the next?

If your brand is your job that's not the right way to play it.

“Branding” was used as a general term. I should have said I use LinkedIn as a place to promote what I do. Not so much the company I’m with—although, working at a company that has a good reputation is definitely a plus. P.S. I don’t sell a product. I provide consultation.

Congratulations on the role! I updated the page the week I started and come to think of it, I don’t think I ever bothered to announce starting the position.

Thank you!! 😊 Honestly, I’ve never done an official announcement in the past. It’s just been an update on my page. I think this time I will do an actual announcement though 🙌

If there's any book of business you anticipate reaching out to, I'd just call/email directly prior to posting.

Unless you're still interviewing...Id post the first week of starting.

I wait until the start date or the day after.

Jason Lemkin who is known as the "God father of Saas" says that if a new hire doesnt change their linked in profile in the first week, it was a bid hire haha
