Leave or Stay?

I landed at a tech company selling a product that has good market fit but not the best. My OTE is a lot lower than what it should be because I'm out of university and they consider me as a new professional. The only thing is I have experience from the military and doing my own entrepreneurial ventures before starting full time. My company hired more experienced hires who are new to the product set. Should I ask for a better compensation package or play the field since it's my first private sector job out of the military/university?

Dude - you're new. They will have to do some major hand holding to get you up to speed. So of course you're paid less. Get the experience (at least 1-2 years), land some deals, learn how to sell properly and then you can set your sites on higher OTE.

Thanks for the feedback. Can you expand upon what hand holding looks like for new reps from your end?

Check out all the questions asked by newer reps in this forum and you’ll get the idea.

While every industry is different there are many “sales 101” things you’ll have to learn. Too many to list here. I recommend searching for “sales books” in the search bar and reading 2-3 of those. That will help you immensely!

I'd say it's a little late to ask for a new comp package if you just started.

Get some numbers posted on the board to show value.

Fair market value is determined by the price acceptable to both buyer and seller- In this case between employer and employee. Ling way to go to tell you that you likely got what you’re worth. Only one way to prove otherwise. Put in the time. Put out the effort. Sell much stuff. Good luck!

You're really new and not yet proven. I'd do that first. Show your value, bring home the $$ in your commission, and deal with your base from a position of value to the company.

Salaries are like airplane tickets - you're not going to have the same price as the guy next to you or the one three rows over who bought their seats at different times and got different offers. Salaries can be negotiated during the offer period; some companies are more willing to negotiate than others, but it is something you can do in the future.

Go kill it! Congratulations. If you've been on these forums at all, you'll see many stories of people who are having an extremely hard time landing a role with no experience. You've done that.

You have exactly zero leverage, so I would forego the salary raise discussion until your results can yield some leverage. Good luck.

Would you be against spilling the beans on your actual OTE?

Also, welcome to the war room! You’re at the right place, savage.

115 OTE 45/55 split. For reference I sell software at a very large enterprise.

And what do you think your OTE should be (since you mentioned it’s a lot lower than expected)?

My base is 15% less than the minimum salary for roles they are hiring now identical to mine (same role, team, and client). With that, I believe my OTE should be at a minimum 15% more to be 130k. It just doesn’t seem right that my quota is 1.5m yet I’m compensated the same as a guy with 500k in the same position as me. All things equal minus the territory. Is this just how sales orgs work?

If you’re hired as an AE, you’re right! However, since you’ve already accepted this offer and started, I’m not sure how this discussion would go.

Maybe start kicking some ass there and ready yourself to get an appraisal + sth extra (for the compensation on the low base right now) when the time comes?

Quick question here - you're on a team where some reps have a classic enterprise quota of 1.5 million and some have a MM quota of $500K?

Not exactly. The way this enterprise works is they funneled all the university hires into the same program with the same pay and then placed them into markets. Majority went to MM with smaller quotas. I went to enterprise accounts due to my professional background but we are compensated the same with OTE

I think it's normal. You can however discuss what would happen to OTE once you're up to speed

So that's your first job with No experience in sales.

You've gotta be more patient bud, give it at least couple of months to be really good at the product you're selling & it's tricks and tips then try to ask for a raise!
