Lufthansa airlines supposedly sparked debate about banning AirTags in checked baggage

I just read an article that addressed the topic of having AirTags in your checked baggage. From what I read, some airlines are saying the AirTags are considered a portable electronic device & need to be powered off when in baggage.

I personally bought AirTags for this reason! They bring me peace of mind when traveling on flights with multiple lay overs & plane changes, especially on international flights. But what do you guys think about the possible ban of AirTags?

Do you place AirTags in your checked baggage?

I didn't even think of that for that option. I do like the idea. ๐Ÿค”

It's soo nice! When I land at each of my layovers, the first thing I would do is make sure my bags are in the same destination as me

I guess I wonder what they are afraid of. Spontaneous combustion by AirTag? People actually knowing where their luggage is? Communication issues?

I know airlines that are notorious for the (shit) quality of their service for finding "lost" luggage. They are obliged by law to keep the cases for a certain period of time, after which they auction off the luggage. I can see why they wouldn't be happy that you, the customer, were able to find your case when they can't.... that might lead to some uncomfortable questions being asked of them, and them actually having to assume responsability for dubious practices.

Interestingly, I really liked the Lufthansa flights I had a couple of years ago. However, those were international, and I know that those experiences are often far better than that more local routes. I guess I'm just surprised by the decision.

Another problem that was happening is that people would lose their bags & the airlines would say they don't know where it is. But then the person would pull up the location from the AirTag & show them where it is and basically demand they go find it. So I'm sure the customer service reps didn't like that

It would have really helped the group of passengers I was with recently when one whole cart of bags was missing, even though the airline was reporting that the bags were at the carousel. I suspect they were sitting on the tarmac in the cart waiting for pickup. An Airtag would have been super helpful right then so the agent could have known where to sent the team who was trying to sort out why there were still 40 people glaring at them. :)

I bought my wife air tags because she loses all of her things. They arenโ€™t helpful when she canโ€™t find her phone or computer to track the items the tags are attached toโ€ฆ

Apparently, the airline has reconsidered their tweet, saying they had miscommunicated. I guess that's a fancy way of saying, "oops, we were wrong."

I don't do much traveling these days, but it is an excellent idea.

Already ruled against. Sets a precident of anything using small batteries. Spare hearing aids?

All good. Just some shitty gate agents and a story blowing out of proportion. FRA is a mess right now though...

I saw that article on LI. I have shipped my bike(s) all over the world and if air tags had existed then, I totally would. My bicycles are in the $5-$10k range and totally worth spending a few extra bucks to secretly track them.

100%! Same thing with ski/ snowboard equipment. Since that gets checked in as oversize or whatever, I feel like it gets lost more often. That's expensive equipment to lose track of

Completely forgot to on my last trip, but I DEFINITELY will.

Seems like a BS reason from Lufthansa.

Maybe if airline companies wouldn't mishandle baggage consistently, individuals wouldn't use airtags in their luggage as often ๐Ÿคท๐Ÿผโ€โ™‚๏ธ

Definitely voted โ€œI have not - But I would!โ€

I have them on my briefcase and gun cases, so this sounds like a good idea too.
