Moving into a solutions consulting or pre-sales engineer role

Hello!

I'm hoping that this is the right avenue for this, but if not I'll happily take the post down. I've been a quota-carrying AE for 3 years and want to migrate into a different piece of the sales cycle. I have learning & development experience, as well as account management. My question is this:

What skills (outside of managing the sales cycle) can I acquire to look attractive to prospective employers?

Thanks so much and I hope you all have a great Q1!

Have you talked to solutions consultants or sales engineers at your company to find out what experience they have and what they think is valuable to know?

I would, but we are so small that the role doesnโ€™t exist. Iโ€™ve reached out to a few recruiters of solutions roles, but I am trying to gain as much insight as I can. Thank you for responding, btw! ๐Ÿ™‚

hmm im not exactly sure what experience would stand out.

i would look at job descriptions you think sound interesting, and see what they list as preferred / required skills.

Do you have any type of technical background you can show as usually for solutions or pre-sales engineering the role entails interacting with the technical counterparts from the prospects side and they will usually dig into functionality and API questions that go over the AEs heads.
