Handling New Feature Request by a Customer

Hey Savages,

How do you handle a situation where the customer wants some new feature and the product manager is not ready to implement it thinking there are not enough requests and lot of effort is required for it.

This feature won't add a lot of value for them but competitors do offer it. The deal will not be lost but I think it's a good idea to inform them that the request has been submitted but cannot assure if this will be worked upon rightaway.

Do you think there could be a better response that will be more effective?

Happens all the time. Tell them itโ€™s on the roadmap now, but youโ€™re unsure when they will get to it.ย

Or, flat out tell them they are shit out of luck.ย

I second this. The worst is when something is promised before it's ready and then an exec forces it through before it's ready. Then you end up in between a halfbaked feature and an unhappy customer.
That was one of my least favorite things at my old saas company.

I agree, I hate promising something that I'm not sure about.

All you can do is raise the request with product. How agile is your development? Is this a big lift for the dev team?

Let the client know youโ€™ve added it to the roadmap with product and of course then look for other clients who can support this request. More clients needing it means faster development in my experience.ย

Agreed, I have taken exactly all these steps. Things that are not in control are not in control. Told the client exactly the same thing and advised they will be notified if we decide to work on it.ย

I think itโ€™s our job to give the customer what they need. Itโ€™s hard to sell an inferior product as well.
Iโ€™d bring it up and say, โ€œhey our biggest competitor has this.โ€ It may get them to add it to your product.
Third - be honest w her. โ€œHey we donโ€™t have it but I suggested it to our team.โ€ You may lose the deal but remember our industry has a terrible reputation and we shouldnโ€™t lie to sell things.
It stinks. Iโ€™m sorry. But youโ€™ll get the next one!

Right, agree. We focus on what's going to be useful for customers. There are many competitors that overwhelm their customers with features they won't even look at. This is one such features no one would look at but I can't tel this guy "look this is an useless feature you got excited about that you won't even use" ๐Ÿ™‚. Spoke to the client and she quite understood appreciated the transparency. Cheers!
